Tragic Collision: North Carolina Man Dies in Luverne Construction Zone

A North Carolina man has died following a collision with a road grader on westbound Interstate 90 near Luverne.
The incident occurred at approximately 10:39 a.m. on Tuesday. David Martin Houck, 41, of Durham, North Carolina, was riding a 2024 Harley Davidson motorcycle when it struck a 2000 John Deere 772G road grader in a construction zone.
Houck, who was wearing a helmet, died from injuries sustained in the crash.
The road grader, operated by 31-year-old Brandon Buddy Feeken of Rushmore, was not injured. Feeken was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the incident.
Local authorities, including the Rock County Sheriff’s Office, Luverne Fire Department, Sanford EMS, and MnDOT, responded to the scene to provide assistance.
Upcoming Elections: Granite Falls to Choose New Mayor After 20 Years
Granite Falls is facing a significant change in its city government this November as residents will elect a new mayor for the first time in over 20 years.
The candidate filing period for Minnesota cities and townships is now open and will remain so until August 13.
The long-serving mayor, Dave Smiglewski, who had been in office since 1996, passed away in September 2023. Smiglewski had also been a city council member since 1979.
Currently, Steve Nordaune, the vice president of the Granite Falls City Council, is serving as the interim mayor until the end of the year, when the mayoral seat will be up for election.
In addition to the mayoral election, three city council seats in Granite Falls are also up for grabs. One is an at-large seat, while the other two represent Ward 1. The current Ward 1 council members are Sharon Pazi Zea and Joe Fagnano.
In Marshall, the mayor and three council seats will be contested this fall. Council member Amanda Schroeder, who represents Ward 1, has already filed for re-election. Schroeder was elected in 2022 in a special election following the death of Don Edblom. The council seats held by Steven Meister in Ward 2 and James Lozinski in Ward 3 will also be up for election.
Other cities in Lyon County, including Balaton, Cottonwood, Florence, Garvin, Ghent, Lynd, Minneota, Russell, and Taunton, will also hold elections for mayor and two city council members. Tracy will have elections for three city council seats.
