Federal Grant Fuels Transit Improvements in Southwest Minnesota
United Community Action Partnership’s Community Transit will soon see improvements with the addition of six new propane-fueled buses, thanks to federal grant funding.
This initiative is part of a broader effort by the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) to upgrade rural transit systems. MnDOT announced the grant last week, stating that $8.5 million from the Federal Transportation Administration would be allocated to three rural Minnesota transit providers, including UCAP.
UCAP, which serves Lincoln, Lyon, Redwood, Pipestone, Murray, Cottonwood, Jackson, and Rock counties, will receive funds to replace six gasoline-powered buses.
The project will also include building a propane fueling station in Marshall. This initiative aims to reduce emissions and improve public transit services in rural areas.
The grant funding is part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which supports low or no emission projects.
The total cost for UCAP’s propane bus project is estimated at $2.8 million, with $2.3 million covered by the federal grant and the remaining funded by state transit resources.
MnDOT highlighted the importance of these projects for rural communities, emphasizing how improved transit systems can connect residents to essential services and opportunities while reducing traffic and pollution.
Senators Tina Smith and Amy Klobuchar praised the initiative, noting its potential to enhance public transportation for rural Minnesotans, making daily commutes safer, faster, and more energy-efficient.
This transition to propane-fueled buses is expected to take place over the next one to two years, significantly benefiting the local community by providing a more reliable and eco-friendly transit option.
