Clara City Man Airlifted, Montevideo Woman Killed in Interstate Crash

An 18-year-old woman from Montevideo, Minnesota, was killed and five others were injured—including a Clara City man—following a pair of serious crashes early Sunday morning on Interstate 39 near DeForest, Wisconsin.
According to the Wisconsin State Patrol, the first crash occurred just after midnight on July 20 when a 2024 Chevrolet Suburban, traveling the wrong way in the northbound lanes, collided head-on with a 2013 Volkswagen Tiguan.
The Suburban caught fire after the impact.
The passenger in the Tiguan, an 18-year-old woman from Montevideo, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, a 19-year-old man from Clara City, suffered life-threatening injuries and was airlifted for emergency treatment.
The Suburban’s driver, identified as 30-year-old Noelia Martinez Avila of Portage, Wisconsin, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was arrested on suspicion of impaired driving.
As emergency personnel responded to the scene, a secondary crash occurred in the southbound lanes. A 2007 Acura TL veered across the median and struck an unoccupied DeForest Police Department squad car that had been parked with emergency lights activated.
Both occupants of the Acura—a 23-year-old man from McFarland and a 23-year-old woman from Oconomowoc—were hospitalized. The driver was also taken into custody for suspected impairment.
The Wisconsin State Patrol is continuing to investigate both incidents. Names of the deceased and injured are being withheld pending family notifications.
Multiple law enforcement, fire, EMS crews, and a MedFlight helicopter assisted at the scene.
Marshall Flood Recovery: United Way Opens Relief Fund for July 18 Victims

The United Way of Southwest Minnesota has launched a disaster recovery fund to assist individuals and families affected by the severe flooding in Marshall on July 18. The initiative is aimed at providing immediate and long-term relief for those facing hardship due to storm-related damage.
The fund will support both individual assistance and broader community-based recovery efforts. A formal grant process is being developed to distribute resources where they are most needed.
To amplify the impact, United Way is also seeking partnerships with local businesses and community organizations to coordinate recovery initiatives. Financial donations are being prioritized to meet the urgent and growing needs of affected residents.
Community members can take the following steps to contribute or access support:
Donate: Contributions can be made online at unitedwayswmn.org/disaster-recovery.
Partner: Local businesses and groups interested in collaborating on relief efforts can connect through the same web link.
Apply for Assistance: Individuals seeking help due to flood impacts can also submit applications via the United Way website.
Request Cleanup Help: Residents needing assistance with cleanup can visit CrisisCleanup.org or call 320-270-3766. The hotline will remain open through August 8.
The United Way’s efforts are part of a broader community resilience strategy, offering critical aid to those beginning the process of rebuilding after the storm.
