Man Dies in Grain Bin Accident Near Milroy

Emergency crews responded to a fatal farm accident Wednesday morning after a man became trapped in a grain bin east of Milroy. Despite rescue efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Redwood County Sheriff’s Office received a call at approximately 9:33 a.m. reporting a male trapped inside a grain bin on the 13000 block of Minnesota Highway 19. Multiple fire departments, first responders, and technical rescue teams were dispatched to the site. The victim was pronounced deceased at 11:19 a.m. His identity has not yet been released, pending family notification.
The Milroy Fire Department led the emergency response, with assistance from departments in Wabasso, Vesta, Walnut Grove, Lucan, Redwood Falls, Tracy, and Marshall. Specialized rescue support came from the Marshall Fire Department’s technical rescue team, which has responded to multiple grain bin incidents in recent years.
This marks the third grain bin emergency in the region in the past three years involving Marshall’s technical rescue unit. In 2024, a fatal accident occurred near Balaton, and in 2023, a similar incident near Porter resulted in one death and one survivor. Last year also saw fatal grain bin accidents in rural Balaton and Lamberton.
The incident remains under investigation by the Redwood County Sheriff’s Office and other involved agencies.
Man Admits to Starting Fire at Mother’s Home, Facing Arson Charge

A Florence man faces a felony arson charge following a house fire earlier this week on Harrison Avenue.
According to court records, 29-year-old Moises Reyes was charged Tuesday in Lyon County District Court with one count of first-degree arson.
The charge stems from a fire that occurred Monday morning, prompting a response from multiple area fire departments.
Initial statements given to investigators indicated that Reyes claimed to have noticed smoke while working outside and attempted to extinguish the flames.
However, further questioning revealed that Reyes admitted to intentionally setting the fire. He told law enforcement that he had become frustrated and ignited a gas can, which he then threw onto lit candles in his bedroom.
The home belonged to Reyes' mother, though he was the only person present at the time of the incident, according to the complaint.
Reyes appeared remotely in court on Tuesday, where bail was set at $170,000 without conditions or $110,000 with conditions.
Restrictions include avoiding contact with witnesses and staying away from the property involved. A follow-up hearing is scheduled for July 29.
