Cottonwood Prepares for Beach and Splash Pad Overhaul with Federal Funding

A long-awaited improvement project at Cottonwood’s C.W. Reishus Park is moving forward, thanks to a $350,000 federal grant awarded through the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF).
Administered by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the funding will support the development of a splash pad, new bathhouse, upgraded playground features, sidewalk improvements, and shoreline restoration.
City officials are currently working with engineers to conduct an archaeological survey required before construction can begin.
Excavation for the survey is expected to start next week. If no significant findings are discovered, work on the project can proceed.
The project’s original timeline has seen delays, largely due to funding freezes earlier in the year. However, those delays allowed city leaders to refine designs and prioritize cost control.
While the total project cost is now estimated at around $1.1 million—surpassing the original $800,000 budget—the additional grant support and design revisions are helping keep it within reach.
City leaders noted that one of the most cost-intensive components will be the construction of the bathhouse. Despite the challenges, they remain optimistic and hope to break ground on the splash pad in 2025.
The LWCF grant, part of a federal initiative funded primarily by offshore oil lease revenues under the Great American Outdoors Act, offers matching funds for outdoor recreation improvements nationwide.
The collaboration between the city and the DNR is expected to bring new life to one of Cottonwood’s key recreational areas.
Intersection Crash in Swift County Leaves One in Critical Condition

A two-vehicle crash in the city of De Graff sent three people to the hospital Thursday evening, including one man with life-threatening injuries.
The incident occurred at approximately 5:43 p.m. at the intersection of Fourth Street and Minnesota Highway 12. A Chevy Equinox traveling westbound on Highway 12 collided with a Lincoln MXK entering the intersection from the south.
The drivers—70-year-old Linda Mary Holzheimer of Appleton and 53-year-old Nicole Rae Petersen of Tyler—were both transported to Benson Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
A passenger in the Equinox, 76-year-old Allen James Sadergaski, sustained life-threatening injuries and was also taken to the hospital.
Emergency crews from the Swift County Sheriff’s Office, De Graff Fire Department, and Benson Ambulance assisted at the scene. The Minnesota State Patrol is continuing its investigation.
