22-Year-Old Injured in Motorcycle Wreck South of Renville

A 22-year-old Olivia man suffered serious injuries in a motorcycle crash Sunday night in Renville County.
The crash occurred just before 9:40 p.m. on June 29 along County Road 6, west of the intersection with County Road 4—approximately nine miles south of Renville. According to authorities, Jacob Haney was traveling westbound on a 2003 Kawasaki Cruiser when he lost control while navigating a curve. The motorcycle veered off the roadway, and Haney was ejected from the vehicle.
Emergency responders arrived quickly at the scene. Haney was stabilized and airlifted to St. Cloud Hospital by Life Link III for further medical treatment. His injuries were reported to be serious.
Agencies assisting at the scene included the Renville County Sheriff’s Office, Minnesota State Patrol, Renville Fire Department and MRU, CentraCare Ambulance from Redwood Falls, and Life Link III.
The incident remains under investigation by local authorities.
Stay Safe This Holiday Weekend: Lyon County Shares Key Reminders

As Lyon County prepares for the upcoming Fourth of July weekend, Sheriff Eric Wallen is encouraging residents and visitors to enjoy the holiday safely by following key safety guidelines. With the combination of fireworks, increased road travel, boating, and unpredictable summer weather, the sheriff’s office is reminding the public to be cautious and informed.
Fireworks are a common part of Independence Day celebrations, but not all types are legal in Minnesota. Fireworks that launch into the air or explode are prohibited for public use. Only non-aerial and non-explosive types are permitted, unless operated by a licensed professional. Authorities emphasize that these regulations are in place to prevent injuries and keep festivities safe.
A new boating law will also take effect on July 1. The regulation requires boaters born after June 30, 2004, to carry a valid watercraft operator’s permit when using motorboats or personal watercraft. Over the next few years, the rule will expand to include older age groups, eventually applying to anyone born in 1987 or later by 2028. The permit is also mandatory for those renting watercraft or supervising young operators. In addition to certification, boaters must ensure safety equipment is on board, including life jackets, flotation devices, fire extinguishers, and operable horns. Younger passengers must wear life jackets at all times, and all adults should have them within reach.
With recent storms and flooding in the region, the sheriff’s office is advising motorists to exercise caution. Roads covered by water should be avoided entirely, as washed-out surfaces can pose hidden dangers. Residents are urged to stay informed about weather alerts, especially distinguishing between watches, which indicate favorable conditions for severe weather, and warnings, which mean a threat is imminent. In tornado warnings, officials advise seeking shelter immediately and avoiding bridges or overpasses due to the potential for flying debris. Low areas like ditches are considered safer options when shelter isn't nearby.
On Wednesday, July 3, law enforcement will increase its presence on area highways as part of a coordinated speed enforcement campaign. Officers from multiple agencies will be monitoring Highways 14, 19, and 60, targeting speeding violations. The initiative is part of Minnesota’s Toward Zero Deaths program, which aims to reduce traffic fatalities—many of which occur during the summer months.
Off-road vehicle use is also expected to rise over the weekend, and the sheriff’s office is reminding ATV and side-by-side operators to check their local ordinances. Every community may have different rules regarding where these vehicles can operate, and most state highways are off-limits. Riders should be aware of local laws, wear appropriate safety gear, and respect community regulations.
With the help of informed and cautious residents, Lyon County hopes to ensure that the holiday weekend is memorable for all the right reasons. Officials continue to stress that safety is everyone’s responsibility—and the best way to make it through the Fourth of July weekend with ten fingers, ten toes, and plenty of great memories.
