Teen Driver Injured in Marshall Traffic Collision

A two-vehicle crash on Highway 23 in Marshall Tuesday afternoon resulted in one person being hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.
The collision occurred at approximately 12:50 PM near the intersection of Highway 23 and East College Drive. Both vehicles—a 2007 Nissan Frontier and a 2021 Dodge Ram 3500—were traveling southbound when they collided.
The driver of the Nissan, a 19-year-old from Tracy, was transported to Avera Marshall Hospital for treatment. Three passengers in the Nissan were uninjured.
The driver of the Dodge, a 70-year-old man from Tyler, was also unharmed.
Emergency response was provided by the Marshall Police Department and North Memorial Ambulance.
Farmers Union Offers Resources, Encourages Public Input on Ag Policy
Farmers gathered in Sleepy Eye this week for a Minnesota Farmers Union (MFU) legislative recap focused on recent policy outcomes and a call to action: speak directly to lawmakers about agricultural concerns. The meeting, held at Sleepy Eye Brewing, emphasized the importance of grassroots communication in shaping policy.
MFU Government Relations Director Stu Lourey encouraged producers to reach out to elected officials, noting that consistent feedback from constituents often influences legislative attention.
Key concerns raised at the meeting included the growing dominance of large-scale dairies, which benefit from economies of scale that smaller producers struggle to match. Attendees expressed worries that consolidation in the dairy industry is edging out smaller operations and creating monopolistic conditions.
In addition to antitrust concerns, attendees discussed federal funding cuts to programs like SNAP, Medicaid, and Medicare. With supplemental food assistance averaging just $6 per day, Lourey warned that state and county systems could face increased pressure if federal support declines.
Local voices echoed these concerns, with farmers and rural advocates emphasizing the growing concentration of wealth and the erosion of antitrust progress made in recent years. There was also disappointment over a legislative decision to remove undocumented adults from MinnesotaCare starting in 2026.
Despite these challenges, the session included some wins for agriculture. The latest state agriculture bill boosts Minnesota Department of Agriculture spending by $9 million over the next two years.
It also allocates $3 million to the Board of Animal Health and Agricultural Utilization Research Institute, and introduces new funds for Farm to School programs, local food purchasing, rural mental health, and livestock protection.
Healthcare policy changes include reforms aimed at reducing prescription drug costs and bolstering community pharmacies through one-time financial support.
Wabasso farmer Paul Sobocinski praised bipartisan collaboration in the legislature that helped prioritize agricultural investments, especially in a tight budget year.
In support of mental health, the MFU is sponsoring a “COMET” session (Changing Our Mental & Emotional Trajectory) this Thursday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Kerkhoven Civic Center. The event will include practical tools for improving emotional well-being and will begin with a light supper at 5 p.m. Registration is available at z.umn.edu/mfuCOMET.
