Teen Injured in Rollover Crash Involving Earth-Moving Vehicle

police

A 17-year-old from rural Springfield sustained minor injuries Tuesday morning following a rollover crash in Lyon County involving a large earth-moving vehicle.

The incident occurred just after 11 a.m. on County Road 13 near the 2200 block. According to the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, the teen was operating the heavy equipment when an oncoming vehicle prompted him to move toward the shoulder to allow room for passing.

The machine veered too far off the roadway and rolled into a ditch, coming to rest on its roof.

Emergency responders from the Russell Fire Department, Russell First Responders, and Tyler Ambulance arrived at the scene. The teen was transported to Avera Marshall Hospital with minor injuries.

Authorities have not released further details, but no other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Playground, Fitness Upgrades, and More Coming to Marshall YMCA

The Marshall Area YMCA is moving forward with several improvements this summer as part of its ongoing capital campaign.

A fitness center remodel, equipment upgrades, and community room renovations are among the updates being implemented thanks to strong local support.

Work on the fitness center is scheduled to begin July 21. Updates include new cardio and weight room equipment, a refreshed layout, and the addition of a functional training area.

The redesigned space aims to improve user flow and create more room for a wider range of workouts. The fitness center will close temporarily during construction.

The YMCA is also preparing for a major indoor addition: a new playground that will transform the current racquetball courts into a space with separate structures for toddlers and school-aged children.

While equipment for the playground has been ordered, it has not yet arrived.

In addition to fitness upgrades, the YMCA’s meeting room is undergoing improvements including new carpeting and seating. The room is being renamed the Ted Rowe Meeting Room in honor of Rowe’s longtime contributions to the Y and the broader community.

Funding for the renovations was supported in part by a $25,000 donation from the Marshall Sunrise Rotary Club.

Behind the scenes, the YMCA is also addressing important maintenance needs such as new water heaters, fire alarm systems, and parking lot upkeep. These infrastructure improvements are less visible but essential for long-term operations.

The capital campaign, with a goal of raising $750,000, reached 93% of its target earlier this year. Additional funding has continued to arrive, including a recent $12,000 grant from Minnwest Bank and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines.

Now over 20 years old, the Marshall Area YMCA continues to serve as a vital community hub, with more than 2,200 active memberships representing over 4,800 individuals.

On busy days, the facility welcomes more than 500 visitors. From swim lessons to packed gym floors, the Y remains a central part of local family life—and this summer’s updates are designed to ensure it stays that way for years to come.
