Two Injured in Highway 212 Crash; Alcohol a Factor, Says State Patrol

Two people were injured in a two-vehicle crash Saturday evening on Highway 212 in McLeod County, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.
The collision occurred around 7:04 p.m., when a 2018 Chevy Silverado traveling eastbound and a 2020 Toyota RAV4 traveling westbound collided. The incident happened near the city of Stewart.
A 75-year-old passenger in the Toyota, identified as Marleen Hartjes of Springfield, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Glencoe Hospital for treatment. The driver, 79-year-old John Hartjes, and an 11-year-old passenger, also from Springfield, were not injured.
The driver of the Chevy Silverado, 70-year-old Randal Kalenberg of Stewart, suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene. According to the crash report, Kalenberg was not wearing a seat belt, and alcohol was a factor in the incident.
Emergency response included the McLeod County Sheriff’s Office, Stewart Fire Department, and Buffalo Lake Ambulance.
The State Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances of the crash.
Marshall Public Schools Face Budget Deficit; Turn to Voters for Support

The Marshall Public School District has officially approved a plan to place a $2 million operating referendum before voters in a special election on November 4, 2025.
If passed, the measure would increase the district’s general education revenue by $765 per pupil, providing critical funding to maintain current programs, staffing levels, and class sizes.
Facing growing budget deficits—$1.1 million in 2024–25 and a projected $1.8 million in 2025–26—district leaders say the referendum is needed to prevent significant cuts to operations, curriculum, staffing, and student services.
If approved, the new revenue would begin in Fiscal Year 2027, the same year the district projects a complete loss of cash flow without new funding. Financial models show that the referendum could restore a positive fund balance, allowing the district to continue operating without interruption.
The proposal, which would be in effect for ten years, includes annual inflationary increases starting in 2027. It follows a failed referendum attempt in 2022 and builds on a previous authorization from 2018, which had provided $675 per pupil in funding.
To help the public understand the financial impact, the district is working with Ehlers Public Finance Advisors. Estimates show that a $2 million referendum would result in the following monthly property tax increases:
$100,000 home: approximately $11/month
$225,000 home: approximately $26/month
$500,000 home: approximately $57/month
Property tax on agricultural land will not be affected, except for the house, garage, and one acre surrounding them—important in a largely agricultural community like Marshall.
In the absence of new federal or state funding, the district had relied on temporary COVID relief funds in recent years to maintain programs, but those resources have now expired.
A dedicated website—www.tomorrowstigers.org—is launching to provide residents with detailed information about the referendum, including the ballot language, tax calculators, frequently asked questions, and more.
District leaders plan to continue engaging the community through meetings, public sessions, and outreach efforts ahead of the vote. The next school board meeting is scheduled for July 21 at 5:30 p.m., and community members are encouraged to attend.
