Suspect in Deadly Attacks on Minnesota Lawmakers Captured After Two-Day Manhunt

police

The man suspected in a deadly shooting spree that targeted Minnesota lawmakers has been arrested following a massive two-day manhunt involving dozens of law enforcement agencies.

Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, continue to recover at Mercy Hospital after being critically injured in a shooting at their Champlin home early Saturday morning.

Investigators say Vance Boelter, 57, is believed to have shot both victims multiple times before fleeing the scene.

Just hours later, Boelter allegedly targeted Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, at their home in Brooklyn Park. Officers responding proactively due to Hoffman’s status as a legislator arrived in time to witness the fatal shooting of Mark Hortman through an open doorway. Both Melissa and Mark were found deceased inside the home.

Authorities say Boelter posed as a police officer and arrived at both homes in a vehicle equipped with emergency-style lights. Investigators later recovered a cache of weapons from Boelter’s vehicle, including multiple AK-47-style rifles, a 9mm handgun, a ballistic vest, and a police-style badge.

A list of lawmakers’ names and addresses was also discovered, indicating the attacks may have been premeditated.

The manhunt for Boelter concluded Sunday evening in Sibley County, after a resident reported a trail camera image that appeared to show the suspect. Law enforcement responded swiftly, using drones and coordinating more than 20 SWAT teams in the area. Boelter was located and taken into custody without resistance.

Officials called the search the largest manhunt in Minnesota history, citing its scale and the number of agencies involved.

Boelter is now in custody at the Hennepin County Jail, facing two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder.

He is being held on $5 million bail and is scheduled to appear in court Monday at 1:30 p.m. in Minneapolis.

The incident has sparked renewed concern about political violence, and both state and federal officials have pledged a thorough investigation into the suspect’s motives and actions.
