Local Business Spotlight: Jake Schwoch Offers Trusted Concealed Carry Courses Through Davey Defense

Southwest Minnesota residents seeking to obtain or renew their Minnesota Permit to Carry now have access to a flexible, legally recognized training option through Davey Defense — a firearms education provider that combines online coursework with live fire instruction to meet state certification standards.

The training program includes two parts: an online classroom component that participants can complete at their own pace, and an in-person range session where certified instructors lead hands-on firearm safety and marksmanship instruction.

The full course meets Minnesota’s legal requirements for carrying a concealed firearm.

One of the regional instructors offering this training is Jake Schwoch, a state-certified permit-to-carry instructor based in Southwest Minnesota.

Schwoch is affiliated with Davey Defense and works with individuals and small groups, often traveling to provide instruction for private sessions of three or more participants. His approach emphasizes safety, legal awareness, and personal responsibility.

According to program details, the training is designed for individuals of all experience levels — from first-time firearm users to those renewing their permit.

The focus is on helping participants become informed, confident, and responsible gun owners. Topics covered in the course typically include firearm safety rules, use of force laws, conflict avoidance, situational awareness, and proper handling during real-world scenarios.

Davey Defense’s program stands out for its accessibility and flexibility, offering participants the ability to complete the educational portion from home while still fulfilling the in-person requirements necessary for certification.

After successful completion, participants receive documentation needed to apply for their Minnesota Permit to Carry.

Community members interested in enrolling in the course or scheduling a group session with Jake Schwoch can learn more by visiting the Davey Defense website or reaching out to Jake directly for availability and details.

Ride Free: Minnesota’s ATV Trails Open for No Registration Weekend June 14–15

All-terrain vehicle riders will have a chance to explore Minnesota’s off-road trails without registration fees during the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) No Registration Weekend, taking place June 14–15.

The event gives both residents and out-of-state visitors an opportunity to access the state’s extensive network of recreational ATV trails. It’s especially beneficial for those with ATVs that are not normally registered for recreational use—such as vehicles with agricultural registration or those registered in other states.

To help riders make the most of the weekend, DNR staff recommend a variety of trails based on experience level. Beginners may want to start with smoother, easier rides such as the Sioux Line Trail, a former railroad route, or trails in CC Andrews State Forest, which offer flat and sandy terrain.

More experienced riders looking for varied or challenging terrain can explore options in St. Croix State Forest, Magic State Forest, or trails along Minnesota’s North Shore, which feature rockier, more technical routes and scenic views.

The DNR encourages all participants to ride safely, wear proper gear, and be aware of trail conditions. Additional information, including maps and trail guidelines, can be found on the Minnesota DNR website.
