Highway 23 Bridge Project Progresses as MnDOT Responds to Safety Concerns

Resurfacing work on two bridges along Minnesota Highway 23 near Green Valley is moving forward, with construction crews now focused on replacing key bridge components.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) reports that old approach panels, deck joints, and concrete surfaces have been removed, making way for new installations.

The project, which began on May 12, involves applying a new surface to the bridge decks and replacing the approach panels and guard rails. MnDOT says these improvements are designed to extend the lifespan of the bridges.

Over the past week, crews have removed the existing approach panels and joints, as well as deteriorated concrete from the bridge decks.

Current work includes repairing the decks and constructing new joints, railings, and sills. Concrete pouring for the new approach panels is planned for the upcoming week.

A detour remains in effect on Highway 23 between Marshall and Cottonwood. Traffic is currently being rerouted via Minnesota Highway 19 and Lyon County Road 9.

In response to safety concerns raised by the public, MnDOT has added new signage along the detour route.

These updates include speed limit reminders, more visible stop signs, and warnings at the intersection of Lyon County Roads 9 and 22 to alert drivers that cross traffic does not stop.

MnDOT officials say the added signage has helped improve safety conditions along the detour route.

MADAN Hosts Annual Walk for Memories – All Are Welcome

Every 65 seconds, someone in the United States develops dementia. In response to this growing public health concern, the Marshall Area Dementia Awareness Network invites the community to take part in its annual Walk for Memories event, a meaningful gathering aimed at raising awareness, honoring those affected, and supporting ongoing advocacy efforts.

This year’s walk will take place on Tuesday, June 17, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Marshall Area YMCA in Marshall, MN.

Participants are encouraged to wear purple to show their support for the cause. The event is free and open to all, with no registration required. Attendees can enjoy an afternoon of walking, community connection, and special activities, including a designated Honorary Walk at 6:00 p.m.

The first 200 participants will receive a swag bag, and the event will feature giveaways, drawings, and vendor booths.

Live music and food will be available for purchase, and commemorative t-shirts will be offered on-site.

The event provides a powerful opportunity for families and friends to come together in solidarity, reflect on personal experiences with dementia, and recognize the efforts of local dementia champions.

To further support the cause, the MADAN Store is now open online with a range of custom purple apparel and merchandise, including hoodies, shirts, tumblers, and tote bags.

These items are perfect for event day and help spread awareness year-round.

Orders can be placed at https://stores.apdesignpro.com/madan or by scanning the QR code available on promotional materials.

Free-will donations will be accepted at the event and will go toward supporting the work of the Marshall Area Dementia Awareness Network.

Donations can be made payable to A.C.E. of SW MN.
