Locked Gate Prompts Legal Dispute Between Marshall and Broadmoor Valley

The City of Marshall has filed a lawsuit against the owners of Broadmoor Valley mobile home park, alleging the installation of a locked gate violated city ordinances and the Minnesota Fire Code.
The city claims the gate, placed at one of only two park entrances, obstructs access for residents and emergency vehicles.
According to a civil complaint filed May 15 in Lyon County District Court, the park’s owners—Schierholz and Associates—installed a chained and padlocked gate at the Highway 23 entrance around March 27.
The city argues that this action left only one functioning entrance, which violates local zoning rules that require mobile home parks to maintain at least two points of access to the public right-of-way.
Previously, Broadmoor Valley had two access points roughly a half-mile apart, connecting to South Saratoga Street and Minnesota Highway 23.
The complaint alleges that no consultation with city officials or emergency responders took place before the gate was installed, which the city contends breaches state fire code regulations.
Further, the city claims Schierholz and Associates refused requests to leave the gate unlocked, asserting instead that the property was not subject to local zoning laws.
The city also accuses the park of operating 11 unregistered rental units and failing to maintain private streets, which are reportedly in poor condition and difficult to navigate due to potholes and pavement deterioration.
In the lawsuit, the city is asking the court to affirm that Marshall ordinances apply to Broadmoor Valley, to permit city staff to conduct inspections, and to declare the gate and road conditions as violations requiring corrective action.
A hearing on the case is scheduled for July 16.
Marshall Student Competes in 100th National Spelling Bee

Marshall middle schooler Charles Mueller-Thompson recently competed in the 100th Scripps National Spelling Bee, held in Maryland.
Though he did not advance to the quarterfinals, Mueller-Thompson successfully completed the first two rounds of the preliminary competition, distinguishing himself among 244 top spellers from across the country.
He was one of only nine Minnesota students to qualify for the prestigious national competition. In the opening round, he correctly spelled “in silico,” while in the second round he identified the definition of “rubric” during the vocabulary segment.
Both early rounds saw dozens of competitors eliminated.
The third preliminary round, conducted as a written test, featured both spelling and vocabulary components.
Mueller-Thompson earned his spot at nationals by placing first at the Southwest West Central Service Cooperative Regional Spelling Bee in Redwood Falls on February 18.
It was his second appearance at regionals. In preparation for spelling competitions, he regularly dedicates several hours each day to studying.
Held at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center, this year’s Bee brought together students from all 50 U.S. states and territories, as well as international participants from countries including Canada, Germany, Nigeria, and Guam.
Ahead of the competition, Mueller-Thompson and his family arrived early to take part in Bee-related events, including a Memorial Day picnic that gave contestants a chance to connect.
The 2025 competition marked the centennial anniversary of the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which began in 1925 and has since become a hallmark of academic excellence and enrichment for students nationwide.
