Veterans Affairs Program on Hold; Private Marker Orders Still Possible

A Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) program that provided Bronze Star grave markers for veterans has been paused this year due to funding limitations. However, the markers themselves remain available through the manufacturer, CenTec Cast Metal Products.

CenTec, based in Fremont, Ohio, continues to produce the Bronze Star markers, which are available for purchase at $38.50 each. Despite some local reports to the contrary, the company has not discontinued production.

Last week, local officials indicated the MDVA had ended its marker program because of budget constraints and the assumption that manufacturing had ceased.

However, the MDVA later clarified that the program had relied on discretionary funds, not a dedicated budget line.

Efforts to secure a vendor through a formal bidding process in 2023 were unsuccessful, with no companies responding to the request for proposals. Informal discussions with manufacturers also failed to yield a cost-effective or scalable solution.

As a result, MDVA will not be issuing Bronze Star grave markers in 2024, citing rising material costs and production limitations.

Veterans’ families and organizations still have other options to honor service members. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs offers bronze medallions for headstones in private cemeteries.

Additionally, Minnesota’s four State Veterans Cemeteries—in Redwood Falls, Duluth, Little Falls, and Preston—provide burial services at no cost for veterans, with low-cost options available for spouses and eligible dependents.

Anyone interested in purchasing a Bronze Star marker directly can contact CenTec Cast Metal Products.

Marshall Police Announce Return of Supervised Level 3 Offender

The Marshall Police Department has issued a community notification that Bradley Scott Edwards, a Level 3 predatory offender, will be moving to the 600 block of West Main Street on Tuesday, May 27, 2025.

Edwards will be under the supervision of the Minnesota Department of Corrections through the Intensive Supervised Release program.

The announcement is being made in compliance with Minnesota statutes that require public notification when certain high-risk offenders move into a community.

A community notification video recorded in August 2020, from Edwards’ previous time residing in Marshall, remains available on the police department’s Facebook page and YouTube channel.

Authorities have confirmed that Edwards has not been charged with any new offenses since the video’s original release.

Additional details are provided in a public fact sheet posted with the department’s official announcement.

Residents with questions or concerns can contact the Marshall Police Department at (507) 537-7000.
