Authorities Respond to Knife Threat, Standoff in Olivia

police

A standoff in Olivia concluded without injuries Wednesday afternoon after a man barricaded himself inside a home following a reported knife-related incident.

Authorities responded to a 911 call at approximately 12:40 PM from a 22-year-old man who reported being chased by a 26-year-old male suspect with a knife.

The suspect subsequently entered a residence on the 600 block of East Maple Avenue and refused to come out.

Local and regional law enforcement, including the Olivia Police Department, Renville County Sheriff’s Office, Minnesota State Patrol, and the Brown Lyon Redwood Renville Emergency Response Unit (BLRR ERU), were deployed to the scene.

Crisis negotiators engaged with the man for nearly three hours before he surrendered peacefully around 3:30 p.m.

No injuries were reported, and the incident remains under investigation. Additional details are expected as the case develops.

Grant Fuels Lyon County Museum’s Plan to Update Historic Display

The Lyon County Historical Society has received a $10,000 grant from the Minnesota Historical Society to begin updating the “Life on the Prairie” exhibit at the Lyon County Museum.

The funding is part of the Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Small Grants program, which awarded $241,168 to 28 projects across 17 counties.

Grant funds will be used to hire a consultant to research Lyon County’s early history. This research marks the first phase of a larger effort to revamp the basement exhibit, which currently features a log cabin and covered wagon and has remained largely unchanged since its opening in 2014.

The museum aims to enhance the exhibit by incorporating more content on Indigenous history, immigration, and early farming practices.

Existing structures like the log cabin and wagon will remain, but updates will include expanded storytelling, interactive components, and educational materials on historical tools and techniques.

The exhibit renovation is expected to follow a phased approach similar to previous museum projects, starting with research, then moving to exhibit planning, design, and installation.

Future updates will depend on securing additional grant funding and community support.

The grant was made possible through the Legacy Amendment, passed by Minnesota voters in 2008, which supports arts and cultural heritage initiatives statewide.
