Teacher Avoids Trial After Misconduct Allegations, Faces 5-Year Oversight

law

Prosecution has been suspended in the case of a former Slayton elementary teacher accused of criminal sexual conduct, according to Murray County District Court records.

Instead of going to trial, 30-year-old Nathan Ray Wieneke must comply with a set of court-ordered conditions through May 31, 2030. These include the revocation of his teaching license, a prohibition on working or volunteering with minors, no contact with the alleged victims, and a requirement to attend therapy and pay restitution. He is also required to stay at least 100 yards away from the victims and locations they may be present.

The agreement also bars Wieneke from petitioning to expunge the case from his record. If he fails to meet any of the conditions, the case may be reopened and prosecution resumed.

The charges, filed in 2023, included six counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct and two counts of third-degree witness tampering. The allegations stemmed from reports by a group of fifth-grade students at West Elementary in Slayton, who said they had been inappropriately touched by Wieneke while at his desk.

A victim impact hearing took place Monday afternoon in Murray County District Court. Attending the hearing was among the terms of the agreement.

According to a memorandum filed March 11, the court found that the legal requirements to suspend prosecution had been met, including consideration of the victims' views, consent from all parties, and a finding that rehabilitation would be more beneficial than proceeding with trial.

Earlier this year, the Minnesota Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board officially revoked Wieneke’s teaching licenses.
