Multi-Talented Musician Elia Koch Performs Senior Recital in Marshall

Elia Koch recently performed his senior piano recital at First Lutheran Church in Marshall, highlighting a repertoire that spanned works by Rachmaninoff, Chopin, Pieczonka, MacDowell, Kabalevsky, and Lemont.

The performance also featured ensemble pieces, including a piano trio with his grandmother, Diane Wright of Marshall, and friend Thomas Felton of Dawson, Minnesota.

Additional highlights of the recital included duets by Mozart and compositions by Walter and Carol Noona, performed with his instructor Anna Jeanne Flesner of Tracy.

A reception followed the event, celebrating Elia’s graduation from the Koch Family Bilingual Classical Home School and the Good Teacher Great Books Classical Home School Co-op.

In addition to completing his high school education, Elia earned an Associate’s Degree in Liberal Arts from Holy Apostles College.

Outside of academics and music, he keeps active as a beekeeper with his brother and works in the family business, Rolling Hills Pizza.

Elia's musical achievements are numerous. He was named a State Piano Contest Winner by the Minnesota Music Teachers Association (MMTA), and passed MMTA Theory Examinations Levels III and IV with High Distinction.

He earned two piano festival trophies within the minimum six-year period, consistently receiving Superior ratings.

His talents extend beyond the piano. Elia has sung in two church choirs and a barbershop chorus, and performed in community theater productions, including Newsies and Romeo and Juliet. He has also provided musical performances for church events and the Tracy Fine Arts Council’s “Celebration in Song.”

In addition to piano and voice, Elia plays double bass with the Southwest Minnesota Orchestra. He is the son of Nikas and Erin Koch of Lynd, Minnesota.

Legal Dispute Heats Up Over Future of Broadmoor Valley Mobile Home Park

law

The owners of the Broadmoor Valley mobile home park in Marshall have filed a legal response to a lawsuit brought by the Minnesota Housing Finance Agency, seeking to cancel a $500,000 grant agreement awarded to them in 2022.

In documents filed April 17 in Ramsey County District Court, attorneys for Schierholz & Associates asked the court to void the grant agreement and associated restrictions.

Minnesota Housing had previously sued the property owners, alleging they violated the terms of the grant by announcing plans to close the park and increasing rent beyond the allowed limit of 5% without prior approval.

According to the original agreement, Broadmoor Valley was required to remain a manufactured home community for 25 years and maintain affordability for residents. Minnesota Housing claims those conditions were not upheld.

In their counterclaims, Schierholz & Associates argued that the state’s actions amounted to an unlawful taking of property, alleging the agency acted in bad faith and infringed on constitutional rights under both federal and state law.

They claim the grant funding fell short of covering necessary infrastructure upgrades and that their subsequent requests for additional support were denied. The counterclaims also suggest that the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office influenced the decision to reject further funding.

The park owners contend they were unable to secure a buyer for Broadmoor Valley or raise sufficient rent to fund needed improvements, leaving them financially constrained. They are now seeking damages and compensation, in addition to the release of grant-related restrictions on the property.

Meanwhile, Schierholz & Associates have announced their intent to close Broadmoor Valley by March 1, 2026. In compliance with Minnesota law, the city of Marshall will hold a public hearing on the closure at 5:30 p.m. on May 7 at Marshall Middle School.

The hearing is required to gather public input and to appoint a neutral third party to oversee relocation assistance payments for displaced residents.

In advance of the hearing, the park’s ownership has distributed letters to residents encouraging them to support the company’s continued involvement in the community.

The letters criticize alleged past actions by resident association leaders and state officials and promote a redevelopment plan the owners say could benefit the community if allowed to proceed.

Residents displaced by the proposed closure may be eligible for relocation assistance through the state's manufactured home relocation trust fund, pending the outcome of legal proceedings and public response.
