Green Valley’s St. Clotilde Church Sold After Years of Inactivity

The former Church of St. Clotilde in Green Valley, which has not hosted worship services for several years, has officially been sold.
Although no longer in use as a parish site, members of the faith community have continued to hope the property would take on a new role within the local area.
Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Marshall announced on social media this week that the sale of the church building and its surrounding property had been finalized.
The property had been listed for sale since January.
SW MN Properties, led by Jordan Handeland, purchased the site, though plans for its future use have not yet been disclosed.
Historical records indicate that a church has existed at the site—located near the intersection of Minnesota Highway 23 and Lyon County Road 8—since at least 1917. The current structure dates to 1959, and a building addition, including a lift, was completed in 2011.
Over its history, St. Clotilde was affiliated with several Catholic parishes in the area, including St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Cottonwood.
These partnerships eventually formed a larger area faith community that included churches in Marshall, Tracy, and Milroy.
Masses ceased at St. Clotilde approximately four years ago. After discussion among parishioners and leadership, the decision was made to sell the property.
While there is a sense of loss associated with the church’s closure, members of the community have expressed hope that the site will continue to benefit Green Valley in a new capacity.
Proceeds from the sale, after necessary expenses, will be directed to the operating fund for the St. Clotilde Cemetery.
Several significant items from the church—including the bell, a concrete statue of the church’s namesake, and the building’s cornerstone—will be relocated to the cemetery.
Other religious items from within the church have already been distributed to new locations.
