Camden State Park Gets 2,500 Trout Just in Time for Fishing Opener

Camden State Park welcomed some special visitors on Tuesday—about 2,500 brown trout—and a crowd of students eager to help with the release.
Crews from Minnesota’s fisheries division brought the fish to stock the Redwood River, just in time for the state’s trout fishing opener this Saturday.
Students from Lynd Public School and Southwest Minnesota Christian High School pitched in, helping fisheries staff transfer nets full of trout to the river.
Along the banks, the Lynd students formed an assembly line, passing the fish-filled nets from one person to the next until they reached the water.
The release is part of a seasonal effort by the Minnesota DNR to prepare local waterways for fishing season. In addition to the 2,000 trout stocked in the Redwood River, another 500 were released into Brawner Lake. Brown trout were also stocked in Scheldorf Creek, located in Cottonwood County.
Camden State Park is known for its “put and take” trout fishing. Because brown trout prefer colder water, they typically don’t survive the region’s hot summer months.
As a result, the DNR stocks trout annually without expecting long-term populations to develop. In recent years, the number of trout released at Camden has increased to meet growing interest from anglers.
For Lynd Public School students, the trout stocking was just the beginning. Their visit will continue with a return trip next week for Environmental Day at the park.
Around 60 students in grades 5 through 8 are expected to take part in fishing, outdoor music and physical education sessions, and presentations from Lyon County Environmental staff. The event offers a hands-on learning experience, combining environmental education with outdoor fun.
With trout now in the river and the fishing season about to begin, students and park visitors alike are hoping for good weather—and maybe a few fish left to catch by next week.
MnDOT Adds LED Safety Signs on Curvy Highways in SW Minnesota

Starting April 14, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) will begin a safety-focused project to install LED chevron signs along curves on highways throughout southwest Minnesota. The goal is to enhance visibility and reduce crash risks on winding roadways.
The $244,000 project will span highways in Kandiyohi, Lac qui Parle, Lincoln, Lyon, Pipestone, Redwood, Renville, and Yellow Medicine counties. Safety Signs has been contracted to complete the work.
The new chevrons, powered by solar panels, are designed to remain lit during daylight hours unless cloudy conditions persist. These LED signs will provide drivers with an extra level of visual guidance, especially on sharp or unexpected curves.
MnDOT plans to install the signs at several key locations:
Highway 40 (Lac qui Parle County)
Highway 68 (Yellow Medicine and Redwood Counties)
Highway 19 (Lincoln, Lyon, Renville, and Redwood Counties)
Highway 30 (Pipestone County)
Highway 167 (Yellow Medicine County)
Highway 9 (Kandiyohi County)
Crews expect to spend up to three days at each site, depending on weather, with the overall project slated for completion by May 5.
Motorists traveling through work zones should be prepared for lane and shoulder closures. Traffic control will be in place, with flaggers guiding vehicles through the construction areas.
Drivers are urged to slow down and stay alert to ensure worker safety.
