Marshall Police Crack Down on Speeding in School Zones

As students continue commuting to and from school each day, the Marshall Police Department is putting a renewed focus on keeping them safe.

A citywide traffic safety initiative has been launched to remind drivers of the importance of slowing down in school zones.

With increased enforcement and educational outreach, the campaign aims to reduce traffic-related incidents near local schools.

School zones are designated for a reason—children are among the most vulnerable pedestrians, and reducing vehicle speed dramatically lowers the risk and severity of accidents.

Drivers are urged to pay close attention to posted speed limits, especially in marked school areas. Motorists should also stay alert for children crossing streets, exiting vehicles, or walking near roads.

Distractions like mobile devices should be avoided completely, and drivers are expected to follow the instructions of crossing guards and school staff.

As part of this initiative, officers will be increasing patrols near schools during key hours to monitor driver behavior.

Violators of speed limits or unsafe driving practices can expect citations.

Meanwhile, families and school staff are encouraged to report reckless driving and continue teaching children basic pedestrian safety, such as using crosswalks and making eye contact with drivers before crossing.

The Marshall Police Department emphasizes that ensuring safety in school zones is a community effort. By working together and staying mindful, the city can help ensure every student arrives at school—and home—safely each day.

Waste Hauling Policy Updated as Landfill Faces Staffing Shortage

Strong winds can create challenges at the Lyon County landfill by blowing around lightweight trash. In some cases, windy conditions force the landfill to close early to help control litter.

Until now, the county had a policy to make up for these closures by opening earlier the following day—a courtesy aimed at local garbage haulers.

However, that policy is now being suspended.

On Tuesday, Lyon County Environmental Administrator Roger Schroeder asked county commissioners to update the landfill’s operational policies.

He pointed out that very few haulers have actually used the extended hours, and maintaining the policy places extra strain on an already short-staffed team.

According to Schroeder, the landfill has only closed due to wind eight times in 2024. On only four of those days did any haulers arrive during the early hours—and in each case, only one truck showed up. This low usage has raised questions about the overall benefit of keeping the extended-hour policy in place.

The wind-related scheduling policy had been in place since around 2010. It originally required the landfill to open one to two hours early following closures caused by high winds.

The intent was to give haulers a chance to catch up, but recent data suggests the effort isn’t making a significant impact.

To help deal with landfill closures during windy days, Schroeder said the Redwood/Renville Regional Solid Waste Authority has expressed a willingness to accept a small number of loads at its transfer station in Redwood Falls.

While discussions with local haulers haven't yet taken place, this alternative could provide some relief—especially with one retired operator not yet replaced and another staff member currently out on medical leave.

After reviewing the information and discussing the issue, county commissioners agreed to suspend the landfill’s wind-related rescheduling policy.
