Minnesota Farmers Reminded of Anhydrous Ammonia Safety Ahead of Planting Season

With spring planting season approaching, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is reminding farmers to take precautions when handling anhydrous ammonia.
While this fertilizer is widely used for its effectiveness, it also carries significant safety risks.
Exposure to anhydrous ammonia can be dangerous, as the chemical seeks out moisture in the body, potentially causing severe injuries to the eyes, lungs, and skin. To minimize risks, the MDA is providing guidance on safe handling practices.
Farmers are encouraged to inspect equipment thoroughly, wear protective gear, and ensure all pressurized lines, tanks, and hoses are properly depressurized before maintenance.
In case of a spill or accident, officials advise farmers to call 911 and notify the Minnesota Duty Officer immediately.
Additionally, transporting anhydrous ammonia requires extra caution. Farmers should adhere to speed limits, maintain a maximum speed of 30 mph when towing nurse tanks, and ensure proper signage is displayed to alert other drivers.
For more safety tips and detailed guidelines, farmers can visit the Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s website.
Marshall Man Fatally Struck by Vehicle on HWY 169

A Marshall man lost his life after being struck by a vehicle early Friday morning in Scott County, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.
The incident occurred around 6:00 a.m. on Highway 169 near Old Brickyard Road.
A Toyota RAV4, traveling southbound, moved into the left lane to avoid a stalled Nissan Maxima on the right shoulder. A pedestrian standing in the left lane was struck by the vehicle.
The pedestrian, a 25-year-old man from Marshall, was pronounced dead and transported to the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office.
Authorities reported that alcohol was present in his system.
The driver of the Toyota, a 45-year-old woman from Jordan, and her 30-year-old passenger were uninjured in the crash.
Emergency crews from the Scott County Sheriff’s Office, Shakopee Fire and Police Departments, Allina EMS, and the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office responded to the scene. The incident remains under investigation.
