Driver Hits 100 MPH in Pursuit Before Arrest in Olivia

police

What started as a routine traffic stop in Olivia on Tuesday evening quickly escalated into a high-speed pursuit, according to local authorities.

The incident began when an officer attempted to pull over a vehicle for speeding near Highway 212 and 14th Street.

The driver, who had also passed another vehicle in a no-passing zone, initially stopped before suddenly accelerating and fleeing westbound.

Law enforcement agencies from multiple jurisdictions joined the pursuit as speeds exceeded 100 mph.

A deputy from the Renville County Sheriff’s Office deployed a tire deflation device, which successfully slowed the fleeing vehicle. During the chase, the suspect forced a deputy off the road, sending the officer into a ditch to avoid a collision.

The pursuit came to an end near the intersection of Highway 212 and County Road 1, where the vehicle stopped, and the driver was taken into custody.

She now faces felony charges and is being held at the Renville County Jail, awaiting arraignment. No injuries were reported.

SMSU Culinary Students Take First Place at National Competition

A team of culinary students from Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) traveled to St. Louis, Missouri, last week to compete in the Research Chef Association (RCA) conference—and they returned home as champions.

The students took first place in the highly competitive student product development competition, showcasing their expertise in culinology and food innovation.

The RCA conference is a premier event that gathers nearly 700 professionals and students from the culinary and food science industries.

This year's sold-out event featured networking opportunities, live demonstrations, and a rigorous competition where student teams developed innovative food products.

SMSU’s winning entry, the "G8 Gnocchi Bowl," was a high-protein meal featuring white meat chicken raised without antibiotics, ancient grain farro flour gnocchi, and locally grown sweet and russet potatoes.

It also included a multigrain blend with edamame and red bell pepper, topped with a protein-rich gravy. Designed as a frozen meal kit, the dish was evaluated based on its fresh and frozen versions, testing how well the flavors and textures were preserved.

The competition involved multiple stages, beginning with a written proposal. SMSU’s team was one of four selected for the final round, where judges assessed both the product concept and its execution in a live setting.

Two separate panels of judges conducted the evaluations—one reviewing proposals anonymously and another overseeing the final preparation and taste test.

Beyond the competition, students had the chance to attend keynote speeches, breakout sessions, and networking events with research scientists and industry professionals.

The experience provided them with valuable insights into food product development, reinforcing their skills in combining culinary creativity with scientific precision.
