From Coloring Contest to K9 Partner: Roxxy is Ready for Duty

Lyon County’s newest K9 now has a name, thanks to a creative contest that let local children take part in the selection.
After a fun-filled deliberation, eight young contest winners chose the name Roxxy for the new four-legged deputy.
Roxxy and her handler, Deputy Beau Swenson, are currently undergoing an intensive 12-week training program in Buffalo.
Once fully trained, Roxxy will serve as a single-purpose police dog, specializing in detecting illegal substances and assisting in search-and-rescue efforts.
The naming contest brought in an overwhelming response, with more than 200 entries from children in fourth grade and under.
Eight winners were selected to help finalize the name, narrowing down a list of options that included Arrow, Ruby, Nora, Shadow, and Pepper. Ultimately, Roxxy stood out as the top choice.
Funding for Roxxy’s training and care comes from opioid settlement grants, and the Sheriff’s Office is also welcoming community donations to support the K9 program.
With training underway, Roxxy will soon be ready to hit the streets and assist in keeping Lyon County safe.
Build, Remodel, and Give Back at the 2025 Marshall Home Show

The 2025 Marshall Home Show is just around the corner, bringing together vendors, services, and resources to help tackle home projects.
This year, the event is proud to partner with Culligan Water of Southern Minnesota as the title sponsor.
Taking place at the Red Baron Arena on March 29-30, the Home Show will offer attendees a chance to explore home improvement solutions while also giving back to the community.
In collaboration with United Community Action Partnership (UCAP), the event will host a donation drive supporting The Kitchen Table Food Shelf. Visitors are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items or contribute monetary donations via a QR code at the event.
The need for food assistance remains high. In 2024, The Kitchen Table Food Shelf provided food for 14,405 individuals, distributing an impressive 351,000 pounds of food.
So far in 2025, 2,300 people have already received support, with 62,100 pounds of food distributed.
Attendees can drop off donations at UCAP’s designated collection bin during the event.
The Home Show is free to attend, running from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, March 30.
