75-Year-Old Woman Injured in Renville County UTV Rollover

police

A 75-year-old woman sustained serious injuries after her UTV overturned in rural Renville County last week.

The crash occurred around 5:02 PM along the 32000 block of 720th Avenue in Henryville Township, approximately seven miles northwest of Morton.

Emergency responders arrived to find the driver, Edna M. Wertish of rural Morton, trapped inside her 2010 Polaris Ranger.

Bystanders provided initial aid before she was freed and taken by ambulance to CentraCare-Redwood Hospital. She was later transferred to a trauma center for advanced medical care.

Investigators determined the UTV had been traveling east when the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to veer into a ditch and overturn.

The Renville County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene with support from the Morton Fire Department, Morton Medical Response Unit, and CentraCare Ambulance-Redwood Falls.

Lyon County Secures Funding for Camper Cabins at Garvin Park

Plans to add camper cabins at Garvin Park advanced this week as Lyon County commissioners took key steps toward moving the project forward.

On Tuesday, the board approved an agreement for a state Legacy grant exceeding $900,000 to support the project. Additionally, commissioners authorized the county to seek proposals for engineering and architectural services for the new cabins.

Lyon County was awarded the grant in December 2023 to construct four camper cabins and make additional upgrades at Garvin Park.

According to county documents, the project includes building a bathroom and picnic shelter at the park’s primitive camping area, as well as a new shelter at the ballfield. The grant will reimburse the county $926,809, with a local contribution of around $103,000.

This isn’t the only improvement in the works for Garvin Park. Another Legacy grant has been recommended for the county, though final approval depends on legislative action.

Commissioners also discussed the process for hiring engineering services. While not required to seek formal quotes, county officials noted past concerns with site design and decided to open the process for bids.

The selected firm will handle site construction plans and architectural designs for the cabins.

The board voted to issue a request for proposals, ensuring a competitive selection process for engineering and architectural work.
