Medical Emergency Suspected in Two-Vehicle Crash at Highway 23 and East College

police

A two-vehicle accident occurred Wednesday morning around 7:30 near the intersection of State Highway 23 and East College Drive.

A westbound Toyota sedan on State Highway 19 collided with a northbound Peterbilt semi at the intersection.

Authorities indicated the Toyota’s driver, a 45-year-old Marshall man, may have experienced a medical emergency before the crash.

He did not appear to be injured but was transported to Avera Marshall for further evaluation. He was also cited for driving after cancellation.

The semi’s driver, a 42-year-old man from Ocheyedan, IA, was not injured.

Marshall Fire Department and Marshall North Ambulance assisted at the scene.

Marshall’s Population Growth Highlighted in State of the City Address

Marshall’s population has been on the rise in recent years, with the latest estimate reaching 13,906. The city’s growth and demographic shifts were key topics in this year’s State of the City address.

Along with population growth, city officials highlighted Marshall’s relatively young median age of 33 years, compared to Minnesota’s statewide median of 39. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2023 estimates also indicated that 21% of Marshall’s residents are nonwhite, and about 16% are age 65 or older.

Economic factors were also discussed, with the median household income in Marshall estimated at $64,636. The city’s leading industries include education, healthcare, manufacturing, retail, and finance. Additionally, around 13.5% of residents speak a language other than English at home.

The census data provided insight into mobility trends within the city. In the past year, about 1.8% of Marshall’s population moved from another state, 6% relocated from elsewhere in Lyon County, and 3% arrived from another Minnesota county.

Statewide population trends indicate that attracting new residents will be critical for Minnesota’s future growth. A recent report from the Minnesota State Demographic Center projects a decline in birth rates over the next two decades as the population ages.

In 2023, migration accounted for 42% of Minnesota’s population growth. However, the state continues to experience losses, particularly among college students who leave for school and retirees who relocate to warmer climates.

Migration patterns also shift within the state. Young adults often move to areas with four-year colleges, while people in their 30s and 40s disperse more widely across Minnesota. Retirement-age individuals frequently settle in northern Minnesota and the central lakes region.

Population projections through 2050 show the most growth occurring in the Twin Cities suburbs, along the I-94 and I-35 corridors, and in central Minnesota’s lakes region. Some growth is also expected in parts of southwest Minnesota, including Lyon and Nobles counties.

City officials emphasized that population growth plays a role in economic development.

Certain industries, such as retail and hospitality, often set population benchmarks when considering new locations. While population growth can be a challenge for rural communities, Marshall benefits from a strong regional draw that enhances its appeal to businesses.

In response to the 2020 U.S. Census results, Marshall pursued an appeal process after its initial count reflected a population decline. The timing of the census, which coincided with Southwest Minnesota State University’s temporary campus closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, likely impacted the numbers.

Following the appeal, the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2023 estimates placed Marshall’s population at 13,906.
