Cinderella’s Closet: Tracy Resident Launches Free Prom Attire Event for Students

Prom is a memorable milestone for many high school students, but the cost of formal attire can be a barrier. This March, Tracy resident Jaci Knipe is partnering with Wheels Across the Prairie Museum to host Cinderella’s Closet, an event offering free prom attire to local students.

Community members are encouraged to donate formal dresses, suits, shoes, and accessories to help stock the boutique. Donations can be dropped off at the museum during regular hours, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., starting Thursday and continuing until March 13.

The idea for Cinderella’s Closet stemmed from Knipe’s desire to support her community during tough economic times. Inspired by a TikTok user contributing to a prom dress drive in Alabama, Knipe decided to bring a similar initiative to the local area.

After sharing the concept on the Mamas of Marshall Facebook group and receiving positive feedback, she connected with Wheels Across the Prairie Museum director Jon Wendorff, who offered the museum as the event venue.

Both male and female formal attire in a variety of sizes are welcomed to ensure inclusivity.

Students will need to present a current student ID to select outfits during the event.

Cinderella’s Closet will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on March 14, and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on March 15 and 16.

If the event is well received, Knipe hopes to organize similar initiatives for homecoming and winter dances in the future.

2024 Lyon County Feedlot Report Highlights Compliance and Decrease in Registrations

Lyon County’s annual feedlot inspection report for 2024 revealed no violations among the sites inspected, according to a presentation at this week’s county board meeting.

The report, presented by Courtney Williams from the Lyon County Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD), highlighted that the county registered 270 feedlots in 2024, a decrease from 286 the previous year.

The county was required to inspect at least 20.5 feedlot sites, with 21 inspections completed.

The inspections were categorized based on the size of the feedlots. Three sites were in shoreland areas, 11 were mid-range with 50 to 299 animal units, and seven were higher-range sites with 300 or more animal units.

All inspected sites met the requirements outlined in the county’s delegation agreement work plan.

Two applications for feedlot permits were submitted during the year. One application involved a manure lagoon, while the other was for a site remodel.

Only the manure lagoon project required a public meeting, as the remodel did not involve changes to animal units.

The SWCD also participated in one outreach workshop in 2024 as part of the Highway 14 CLASIC tour, which had approximately 75 attendees.

County commissioners approved the annual report following the presentation.
