New K9 Joins Lyon County Sheriff's Office with Community Naming Contest
The Lyon County Sheriff's Office has introduced its newest member—a two-year-old German shepherd. The K9 will undergo specialized training to detect drugs and track missing individuals.
The dog will work alongside Deputy Beau Swenson, who will serve as its handler.
The Sheriff's Office secured grant funding from opioid settlement resources to support the K9 program. The new K9 will undergo 12 weeks of training beginning in March, focusing on detecting illegal substances and locating missing persons.
Once training is complete, both the dog and handler must pass certification to begin active duty.
Unlike dual-purpose K9s that are trained to pursue and secure suspects, Lyon County’s dog will be single-purpose, with its skills dedicated solely to drug detection and search missions.
To engage the community, the Sheriff's Office is inviting children in fourth grade and younger to participate in a coloring contest.
The winner will help select the K9’s name. Coloring sheets are available at the Law Enforcement Center in Marshall, and completed entries must be submitted by March 10.

Avera@Home Southwest Minnesota, headquartered in Marshall, has earned a 5-star rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)—the highest accolade awarded to hospice agencies.
CMS evaluates providers quarterly based on feedback from patients' families and caregivers through the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) Hospice Survey.
The ratings help consumers compare services on the Care Compare website. This marks the first time Avera@Home Southwest Minnesota has received a 5-star rating.
The rating reflects the dedication of the Avera@Home team to delivering high-quality, compassionate care.
The survey assesses communication, symptom management, caregiver support, and overall experience, with the latest ratings released on February 19, 2025.
Serving a 16-county area from offices in Marshall and Worthington, Avera@Home Southwest Minnesota continues to prioritize patient-centered care and excellence in hospice services.
