Demand for Food Shelves Hits All-Time High in Minnesota

Minnesota saw a dramatic rise in food shelf visits in 2024, marking the fourth consecutive year of record-breaking demand. Nearly 9 million visits were recorded across the state, reflecting a significant increase from the previous year and more than double the numbers reported before the pandemic.
The primary factor driving this surge is the sharp rise in grocery prices, which have climbed 28% since 2019. Although prices stabilized for part of 2024, the latter months and early 2025 have shown signs of another upward trend.
Adding to the financial strain, pandemic-era SNAP benefits came to an end, reducing monthly assistance by $100 per person.
The combination of rising costs and reduced aid has forced more families to seek help from food shelves, placing additional pressure on community resources.
