Pickup Crash Claims Two Lives in Redwood County

Two men lost their lives in a single-vehicle crash Saturday night in Redwood County, according to local authorities.
The accident happened around 10:06 PM at the intersection of County Road 15 and Jade Avenue, east of Lamberton.
Officials reported that a 2012 Chevrolet Silverado was involved.
Preliminary findings indicate that the driver was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene. The passenger, who was trapped inside the truck, also did not survive.
The names of the victims have not been disclosed, and the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Minnesota Lawmakers Address Budget Concerns and Policy Changes

Minnesota’s state budget, ongoing legislative session, and federal policy decisions were key topics at the Lyon County Republican convention on Saturday, where area lawmakers provided updates and answered questions.
State Rep. Chris Swedzinski of Ghent and Sen. Gary Dahms of Redwood Falls spoke about Minnesota’s budget forecast, expressing concerns over government spending at both the state and federal levels.
While the November forecast projected a $661 million surplus, a significant deficit is anticipated in the coming years. The official February forecast, expected in early March, may indicate an even larger shortfall, raising concerns about budget priorities and spending.
Lawmakers also addressed Gov. Tim Walz’s proposed budget, which they said would shift costs to local governments, disproportionately affecting rural areas.
The start of this year’s legislative session was described as unusual, with the Minnesota Senate operating under a power-sharing agreement for three weeks following the passing of Sen. Kari Dziedzic in December.
Once Democrats regained their 34-33 majority, partisan divisions resumed. A delayed start in the Minnesota House, caused by a Democratic boycott, has also put pressure on legislative deadlines, particularly for passing the state budget. Without a finalized budget by July 1, a government shutdown could suspend essential services.
Beyond state politics, Swedzinski spoke about federal spending challenges, calling for greater accountability in Washington, D.C., and suggesting that significant policy changes could be ahead, particularly under former President Donald Trump’s influence.
Attendees raised concerns about Minnesota’s new paid family and medical leave law. Republican lawmakers have introduced bills to amend it, though hearings on those proposals are unlikely. Some hope negotiations at the end of the session may lead to revisions.
Energy policy was another major discussion point, particularly regarding federal funding freezes affecting green energy initiatives. There were questions about the future of the Sherco coal-fired power plant and whether Minnesota can meet growing energy demands as industries shift toward AI and digital infrastructure.
Lawmakers emphasized the need for reliable energy sources, including coal and nuclear power, to support economic growth.
Looking ahead to elections, attendees asked whether Minnesota Republicans had strong candidates for key races, including the governor’s office and the U.S. Senate seat currently held by Tina Smith.
Lawmakers said potential candidates are emerging but emphasized the need for strong grassroots support. They noted that Republicans have been significantly outspent in recent elections and stressed the importance of mobilizing resources and voter engagement for the upcoming races.
