Extreme Cold Warning in Effect: Frostbite Risk in Minutes

Southwest Minnesota, including Marshall, is facing dangerously cold temperatures as an Extreme Cold Warning takes effect from early Monday morning until midday.

Wind chills could plummet to -38°F, creating hazardous conditions for residents.

The bitter cold will persist, with an Extreme Cold Watch in place from late Monday night into Tuesday morning. Wind chills could drop as low as -45°F across Lincoln, Lyon, Murray, Cottonwood, and Pipestone counties in Minnesota, as well as parts of central and east-central South Dakota.

Hazards & Safety Measures

  • Frostbite risk is severe, with exposed skin susceptible in just 10 minutes.

  • Residents should minimize time outdoors, dress in layers, and cover extremities.

  • Vehicles should be stocked with emergency supplies in case of travel issues.

Upcoming Temperatures

  • Monday: High -6°F, Low -20°F

  • Tuesday: High -3°F, Low -12°F

  • Wednesday: High 5°F, Low -13°F

A slow warming trend is expected later in the week.

Residents are encouraged to stay updated on local forecasts, limit outdoor exposure, and check on those who may be more vulnerable to the extreme cold.

New Nesting Activity Spotted on DNR Eagle Cam

A pair of bald eagles near the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Eagle Cam have been actively preparing for the nesting season. Each morning, they can be seen bringing sticks and grasses to their nest, reinforcing their home for the months ahead.

In addition to working on their primary nest, the eagles have also been constructing an alternate nest nearby. While still visible from the Eagle Cam, this secondary nest won’t offer the same up-close views.

Wildlife enthusiasts can continue following the eagles’ preparations through the DNR’s Eagle Cam, watching as the pair makes final adjustments before the breeding season begins.
