Truck Breaks Through Ice on Del Clark Lake; Driver Escapes Safely

A vehicle plunged through the ice on Del Clark Lake near Canb on Sunday morning, leaving it submerged in approximately 30 feet of water. The driver managed to escape without injury and safely reunited with his group.
Authorities believe recent warm temperatures contributed to the ice weakening, making conditions hazardous. Recovery efforts are currently in progress to retrieve the sunken truck.
The area has been marked with traffic cones, and officials are urging the public to exercise extreme caution on frozen lakes, reminding everyone that no ice is ever entirely safe.
Lyon County Responds to Immigration Policy Labeling
Lyon County has been labeled an immigration “sanctuary county” by outside organizations, but local officials say they have never taken any action to justify that classification.
The designation appeared on lists compiled by groups such as the Center for Immigration Studies and America First Legal, both of which claim the county is not fully cooperative with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Sheriff Eric Wallen stated that the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office does cooperate with ICE when legally possible.
However, the department lacks the authority to enforce federal immigration laws or detain individuals solely for ICE without a judicial warrant or state criminal charges.
Wallen also noted that detaining individuals without legal grounds could expose the county to lawsuits, referencing a past legal case in Minnesota where a county was sued for holding inmates for ICE.
America First Legal published Lyon County’s contact information online and sent a letter warning that the county was at risk of violating federal law.
County Administrator Loren Stomberg confirmed receiving the letter but expressed confusion over the designation, emphasizing that Lyon County has never declared itself a sanctuary jurisdiction.
The controversy comes amid heightened national attention on immigration enforcement.
Federal agencies have not directly contacted Lyon County regarding any noncompliance, and officials maintain that their policies follow legal guidelines set by the state and courts.
