Cottonwood Lake Rescue: Man and Dog Saved from Freezing Waters

A Cottonwood man and his small dog were rescued Monday morning after their vehicle plunged through the ice on Cottonwood Lake.

The incident occurred on Monday at around 9:20 AM, prompting an emergency response from the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, Cottonwood Fire Department, and Cottonwood Ambulance.

Emergency crews and a local resident worked together to pull the 68-year-old man from the frigid water.

He was transported to Avera Marshall Hospital for treatment. The dog was also rescued and taken to Lakeside Companion Animal Clinic for care.

The incident serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of ice conditions, even in extremely cold weather.

Ice thickness can vary significantly, and areas of open water may persist despite freezing temperatures. Authorities emphasize the importance of exercising caution and having a safety plan when venturing onto frozen lakes or ponds.

Helping Hungry Kids: Marshall Nonprofit Seeks Support Amid Rising Costs

Marshall Food4Kids, a nonprofit dedicated to combating child hunger, has experienced a notable 20% increase in the number of students it serves this school year.

Volunteers attribute the growing demand to economic pressures, particularly rising food costs.

The organization provides over 800 children in kindergarten through sixth grade with weekly snack bags filled with healthy, kid-friendly items like fruit, granola bars, and juice boxes.

These bags are discreetly placed in students' backpacks to ensure they have access to nutritious food over the weekend.

However, the rising demand has brought significant challenges. Due to funding constraints, the program can no longer extend its services to seventh and eighth-grade students, leaving an estimated 85 to 100 children in those grades without support.

Additionally, the number of food items in each bag has been reduced to manage costs.

Food prices, exacerbated by post-COVID inflation, remain the primary expense.

Snack bag costs now average $2.90 each, translating to approximately $2,500 per week to serve grades K-6. For the remaining 32 weeks of the school year, this amounts to an estimated $80,200.

Grant funding for Food4Kids has also diminished, prompting the organization to actively seek new grants and host community fundraisers.

Events like spaghetti dinners and pancake breakfasts help bridge funding gaps.

Despite these challenges, the Marshall community has shown unwavering support.

Around 67 volunteers each month contribute their time to packing snack bags, with groups from schools, Southwest Minnesota State University, and local churches pitching in.

This collective effort highlights the community’s commitment to ensuring local children do not go hungry.
