Life-Saving Efforts Lead to Airlifts After Hog Barn Incident

Two individuals were airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis after being found unresponsive in a hog barn on Saturday evening.
The Yellow Medicine County Dispatch received a 911 call at around 5:15 PM on January 18, prompting an immediate emergency response.
Upon arrival, first responders discovered that the victims had been removed from the barn by the caller, who had initiated life-saving measures until EMS personnel took over.
Emergency medical teams, supported by multiple agencies, provided care before the individuals were flown to the hospital via Life Link III and Mayo Clinic air ambulances.
The current conditions of the individuals have not been disclosed. Authorities stated there were no indications of foul play, and the incident is under investigation.
A coordinated response to the scene included the Clarkfield and Granite Falls Fire Departments, Clarkfield and Granite Falls Ambulance services, Life Link III, Mayo Clinic Air Ambulance, the Minnesota State Patrol, and the Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office.
Marshall Feels Impact of Statewide Respiratory Illness Surge

This winter has brought a significant surge in respiratory illnesses across Minnesota, and the impact is being felt in the Marshall area.
Local healthcare providers report a marked increase in patients seeking urgent care and hospital treatment for respiratory conditions, with influenza leading the charge alongside COVID-19 and RSV.
The surge in cases began accelerating after Thanksgiving, with influenza driving many hospital visits.
COVID-19 and RSV have also contributed to the uptick, creating a complex mix of respiratory ailments that have challenged healthcare facilities statewide.
According to the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), 2,716 people have been hospitalized with influenza this season, including 742 hospitalizations in just one week ending January 11.
Beyond individual cases, outbreaks of acute respiratory illnesses have been reported in schools and long-term care facilities.
As of mid-January, 10 new school outbreaks and 14 new outbreaks in long-term care facilities were documented, underscoring the widespread nature of these illnesses. COVID-19 hospitalizations also surged during November and December, according to MDH data.
Locally in Marshall, the emergency department has seen a significant influx of patients with respiratory illnesses. While many cases involve individuals whose underlying conditions were exacerbated by illnesses like influenza, the rise in hospital admissions highlights the serious toll these diseases can take.
Healthcare providers in the area emphasize the importance of preventive measures to combat the spread of respiratory viruses. Simple actions like frequent handwashing, avoiding large gatherings, and staying home when feeling unwell can help curb transmission.
