ATV Accident in Cottonwood Lake Leads to Arrest

On Sunday, January 12, 2025, a side-by-side ATV plunged into Cottonwood Lake in the City of Cottonwood, prompting a swift response from local emergency teams.

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, along with the Cottonwood Fire Department and Ambulance, arrived at the scene to assist the three individuals involved.

The ATV, which became partially submerged, was carrying an adult driver, an adult male passenger, and a juvenile female.

Fortunately, all three occupants managed to escape the vehicle and reach the shoreline. Emergency personnel provided treatment on-site, with the two adults later transported to Avera Marshall for evaluation and subsequently released.

The juvenile, unharmed in the incident, was safely returned to her family.

Authorities later arrested the ATV driver on charges of criminal vehicular operation.

The individual is currently being held in the Lyon County Jail as the investigation continues.

New Nursing Program at SMSU to Address Regional Healthcare Needs

Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) and Avera are joining forces to establish a four-year nursing program aimed at expanding educational opportunities and addressing the pressing demand for healthcare professionals in Minnesota.

This new initiative will build upon SMSU’s existing RN to BSN program, offering a more robust pathway for aspiring nurses.

The program is set to merge SMSU’s academic strengths with Avera’s clinical expertise, creating a curriculum tailored to modern healthcare challenges.

Plans include the development of cutting-edge nursing simulation labs equipped to train both students and practicing nurses in advanced clinical techniques.

The initiative is pending approvals from the Minnesota State system, the Minnesota Board of Nursing, and the Higher Learning Commission.

Once launched, the program is expected to not only bolster local healthcare facilities with highly skilled graduates but also address regional staffing shortages, ultimately enhancing patient care.

This collaboration underscores a shared commitment to preparing the next generation of healthcare workers while meeting critical community needs for trained nursing professionals.
