Top Baby Names of 2024 Revealed by Avera Marshall Medical Center

Avera Marshall Medical Center has revealed its top baby names for 2024, showcasing a mix of traditional and modern favorites for boys and girls born at the hospital over the past year.
Among the boys, Wesley, Weston, and Theodore led the list, while Grace, Ivy, and Charlotte were among the top picks for girls. This year’s names reflect both enduring classics and emerging trends in baby naming.
Nationally, some names on Avera Marshall’s list have shown consistent popularity. For example, Olivia, a top girls’ name at the hospital, has ranked as the most popular name for baby girls in the U.S. since 2019, according to the Social Security Administration (SSA). Similarly, Theodore and Henry have remained popular for boys across generations, maintaining their appeal since the early 1900s.
However, other names highlight more recent trends. Names like Raelynn, Kinsley, and Weston have gained traction over the past few decades. Raelynn and Kinsley, popular among girls, first appeared in SSA rankings in the 2000s, while Weston’s rise in popularity dates back to the 1960s and ’70s.
Interestingly, Liam, the SSA’s top male name in 2023, did not make Avera Marshall’s list this year but remained popular across the broader Avera Health service area, spanning Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska, and the Dakotas.

Regulators Pause Gas Pipeline Near Sacred Pipestone Area

Progress on a gas pipeline near Pipestone National Monument has been suspended following a decision by the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (PUC).
On Tuesday, the PUC unanimously revoked the project's permit and directed cultural and archaeological surveys on two alternative routes.
The decision comes amid strong opposition from tribal groups, who consider the area sacred to their religious practices.
Previously, the PUC approved a 13.1-mile route in September that moved the pipeline farther from the monument than the company had preferred.
However, the latest decision reflects a shift in priorities, with the PUC emphasizing further study of the area before any final route is selected.
The surveys will inform the PUC's ultimate decision, which may result in the approval of one of the alternative routes.
