Marshall City Moves Forward with 9.8% Levy Hike, Lyon County Opts for 4.2%

Both the City of Marshall and Lyon County have finalized their budgets and levy increases for 2025, addressing rising costs and financial challenges while focusing on key priorities like public safety and infrastructure.

Marshall City Budget and Levy

The Marshall City Council approved a 9.8% levy increase, bringing the total levy to $9.87 million.

This increase will help cover rising health insurance and personnel costs, including funding for two new full-time positions in the Marshall Police Department.

The decision also marks a shift away from the city’s fleet rental program with Enterprise Rent-A-Car, which had not met expectations.

Council members emphasized the importance of supporting public safety and addressing compensation adjustments for law enforcement personnel.

While acknowledging the steep increase, officials stated that the levy would position the city to better manage future budgets.

Lyon County Budget and Levy

Lyon County Commissioners approved a 4.2% levy increase, adding $681,000 to the county’s total net levy of $16.9 million for 2025. To balance the budget, approximately $325,000 from the county’s General Fund will also be utilized.

The county’s budget faced challenges, including reduced interest revenue.

However, officials noted that interest rates are stabilizing, and opportunities to refinance bonds for the Lyon County Government Center could provide additional financial relief.

The levy increase also supports essential funds such as general revenue, road and bridge, and health and human services.

Both the city and county have acknowledged the complexities of budgeting in a challenging economic environment, highlighting the need to balance current needs with long-term fiscal responsibility.
