Semi-Truck and Van Collide Near Cottonwood

A two-vehicle collision on Minnesota Highway 23 near Cottonwood on Friday evening left a Belview woman with non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash occurred around 4:22 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 23 and Lyon County Road 10.

The incident involved a northbound 1999 Peterbilt semi-truck and a 2013 Chrysler Town and Country.

The Chrysler, stopped at a stop sign on County Road 10, collided with the semi when one of the vehicles pulled into the intersection.

Emergency responders, including the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, Cottonwood Fire Department, and Cottonwood Ambulance, arrived on the scene.

The driver of the Chrysler, a 76-year-old woman from Belview, was transported to Avera Granite Falls for medical attention.

The crash remains under investigation by the Minnesota State Patrol.

Minnesota Faces Record-High ATV Fatalities in 2024 with 30 Dead

Minnesota may face a record year for fatalities related to all-terrain vehicle (ATV) crashes, with 30 deaths already reported in 2024, according to the Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

The median age of those who lost their lives was 44, and the majority—23 fatalities—were male operators.

A significant number of these crashes occurred when ATVs were operated on public roads.

Incidents often involved rollovers or collisions with other vehicles, highlighting the risks associated with road use.

While ATV operation on roadways is regulated by local ordinances, more than 30 Minnesota counties and cities currently allow ATV use on certain roadsides.

With over 343,000 registered ATVs statewide, the DNR emphasizes the importance of adhering to safety guidelines and avoiding road use to mitigate accidents.

The DNR continues to promote safe practices to curb the rising trend of ATV-related fatalities as 2024 progresses.
