Holiday Driving Alert: Fatalities, DWI Risks, and Winter Prep

Road fatalities in Minnesota have risen sharply this year, with 424 deaths reported as of December 1, a 16% increase compared to the same period last year.
Unbelted fatalities have seen an alarming 39% rise, with southwest Minnesota notably having lower seat belt usage rates. This lack of seat belt use continues to have deadly consequences.
Key factors contributing to fatal crashes include speeding, failure to wear seat belts, distracted driving, and driving under the influence.
With the holiday season approaching, law enforcement across Minnesota is ramping up DWI enforcement.
Drivers arrested for intoxicated driving during the holidays may face extended jail time due to court closures, reinforcing the importance of planning sober rides.
As winter weather creates challenging driving conditions with snow, ice, and high winds, drivers are reminded to prepare for emergencies.
Packing warm clothing, ensuring phones are charged, and keeping gas tanks full can make a significant difference if stranded during harsh conditions.
