Giving Back: Thanksgiving Community Meals Across the Region

Thanksgiving is a time for gathering with loved ones, and many residents in the Marshall area are preparing to share holiday meals with their neighbors.

In Marshall, a dedicated group of volunteers is working hard to bring the annual community Thanksgiving meal to life at Grace Life Church.

Over 100 volunteers contribute their time and effort to make this meal a success, from peeling hundreds of pounds of potatoes to setting tables and delivering meals to homebound individuals.

The dinner will be served on Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the fellowship and worship center at Grace Life Church.

Preparation for this event begins long before the holiday, with fresh vegetables like corn and squash grown over the summer featured in the meal.

As Thanksgiving week unfolds, volunteers handle everything from pie donations to meal preparation and delivery.

Community Thanksgiving meals are not limited to Marshall. Several nearby towns are also hosting events:

  • Canby: First Presbyterian Church will host a meal from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with free-will donations supporting community initiatives.

  • Minneota: Bethel Fellowship Church will serve a family-style meal at noon. Reservations are preferred but not required.

  • Tracy: Tracy Alliance Church will offer a meal from noon to 1 p.m. Donations are not needed.

  • Tyler: Tyler Alliance Church will hold its meal at noon, with seating starting at 11:30 a.m. Reservations can be made by calling 507-247-3824.

These events highlight the spirit of gratitude and giving, as local communities come together to ensure everyone has a place to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal.

Preparations Begin for Major Highway 19 Revamp in Marshall

A significant reconstruction project on Minnesota Highway 19 in Marshall is moving forward, prompting several legal notices in recent editions of the Independent.

The notices detail the condemnation of land within the highway’s right-of-way, a necessary step for obtaining temporary easements for the project, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT).

These easements are essential for construction activities such as building sidewalks and driveway entrances.

The Highway 19 reconstruction project, spanning from Marlene Street to the intersection of East College Drive and North Bruce Street, is planned in two phases and will take place over two years, starting in 2025.

Phase one will focus on the section from Marlene Street to East College Drive and Main Street, and will include the construction of a roundabout near the National Guard Armory at the intersection of College Drive, South Second Street, and Country Club Drive.

The project affects 100 parcels of land along College Drive.

Of these, 39 parcels are undergoing the condemnation process to secure temporary easements. Under Minnesota law, the state can acquire property for public purposes such as highway projects.

Property owners are compensated either through direct purchase or via a condemnation process.

In cases of condemnation, a court appoints commissioners to determine the value of the property being acquired.

On Nov. 22, legal notices for the Highway 19 project were published, outlining petitions to condemn parts of these properties. Remote hearings on the petitions are scheduled for Feb. 5 in Lyon County District Court.

This project marks a major step in improving infrastructure in Marshall, aiming to enhance traffic flow and safety on Highway 19.
