Sheriff’s Office Warns of Rising Phone Scams in Lyon County

The Lyon County Sheriff’s Office is raising awareness about a recent increase in fraudulent phone calls targeting residents.
Scammers are impersonating government officials or business representatives, claiming the victim owes a debt and pressuring them to make payments using unconventional methods such as gift cards, iTunes credits, or PayPal funds.
After convincing the victim to purchase gift cards, the scammers instruct them to provide the numbers from the back of the cards, granting the criminals instant access to the money.
Authorities stress that legitimate government agencies or businesses never request payments via gift cards or similar methods.
In some instances, scammers stay on the phone while the victim travels to make the purchase—a tactic officials identify as highly suspicious and indicative of a scam.
Residents are urged to remain cautious, particularly older individuals who are often targeted by these schemes. Families are encouraged to discuss these scams to help protect vulnerable relatives.
If you receive a call that seems questionable, the Sheriff’s Office advises contacting them directly for assistance.
The guiding principle remains clear: if a demand for payment seems unusual or out of the ordinary, it’s likely a scam.
19-Year-Old Injured in Highway 75 and County Road 9 Collision

A collision between a car and a tractor on Saturday afternoon in Lincoln County resulted in non-life-threatening injuries for a Lake Benton resident.
The crash occurred at approximately 4:03 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 75 and County Road 9.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a 2000 Pontiac Bonneville traveling southbound on Highway 75 and a 2000 John Deere tractor traveling eastbound on County Road 9 collided in a "T-bone" crash after one of the vehicles reportedly failed to stop at the intersection.
The Pontiac's driver, 19-year-old Kaden Lingen of Lake Benton, was injured and transported to Tyler hospital for treatment.
The tractor’s driver, 20-year-old John Wipf, also from Lake Benton, was uninjured.
Emergency assistance was provided by the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Lake Benton Fire and First Responders, and Tyler Ambulance.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident.
