Winter Arrives: Snow, Ice, and Safety Tips

Southwest Minnesota experienced icy conditions as overnight sprinkles turned into snow, coating roads and sidewalks.

Drivers are advised to proceed cautiously by reducing speeds, increasing following distances, and ensuring headlights are on. Checking 511MN.org for updated road conditions can provide crucial travel insights.

With the snow season underway, winter parking rules are in effect until April 1.

Residents must be mindful of signage, especially on snow emergency routes and in designated downtown parking lots. Compliance ensures smooth snow removal, with the city working to notify violators before ticketing or towing.

This initial snowfall marks the transition to winter, sparking reflections on the city’s historical snow patterns.

Marshall has recorded its earliest measurable snow on October 2, 1999, and its latest on December 21, 2006.

While snowfall began late last year, with the first inch recorded in January, this winter is predicted to be mild in the coming days, with mostly dry conditions and highs in the 30s.

Residents are encouraged to take precautions while enjoying the winter scenery.

Proper footwear can help navigate icy sidewalks, and maintaining preparedness in vehicles—such as carrying blankets and emergency kits—is recommended as temperatures continue to drop.

Organic Dairy Producers Get More Time to Apply for USDA Aid

The USDA’s 2024 Organic Dairy Marketing Assistance Program (ODMAP) now has an extended application deadline of December 13, 2024, providing more time for organic dairy producers to apply for much-needed financial support.

With $58 million allocated, the program addresses challenges like market volatility, rising input costs, and unstable feed prices.

Key enhancements include a higher payment rate of $1.68 per hundredweight and an increased production cap of nine million pounds, offering broader coverage for organic milk from cows, goats, and sheep.

Producers can qualify based on 2023 marketing data or estimated 2024 production if there’s been growth.

ODMAP is designed to complement other USDA initiatives, such as Dairy Margin Coverage (DMC), which has already provided over $36 million in benefits for 2024.

These programs aim to create stability and sustainability for organic dairy operations, fostering resilience amid economic pressures.

Eligible producers must submit their organic certification, certify production volumes, and complete an application at local USDA Service Centers.

The USDA encourages proactive participation, emphasizing its commitment to supporting organic agriculture.

For more information, producers can visit farmers.gov or contact their USDA Service Center.
