City of Marshall Restricts Wind Farms, Allows Small Decorative Wind Towers Only

The City of Marshall has taken steps to restrict commercial wind energy projects within its limits.

On Tuesday, the Marshall City Council voted to amend city ordinances, effectively banning commercial wind farms from being constructed in the area. However, smaller decorative or single-use wind towers are still permitted.

The change, recommended by the Marshall Planning Commission after a public hearing, is intended to prevent large-scale wind developments while allowing for smaller structures.

The ordinance specifies that approved wind towers must not exceed the city’s maximum building height or 50 feet, whichever is lower.

The ordinance was adopted with a 4-1 vote by the council, with council member Steven Meister voting against it.

Council member Amanda Schroeder expressed that the change aligns with community needs, as there was minimal concern during the discussions.

Marshall’s decision reflects a cautious approach to balancing renewable energy trends with local zoning considerations, keeping large commercial developments out while allowing limited wind energy installations for personal or decorative use.

Bomb Threat Hoax Shuts Down Murray County Government Center

On Tuesday an emailed bomb threat targeting the Murray County Government Center prompted an evacuation of the building and a temporary lockdown at Murray County Central Schools.

In response, the Murray County Sheriff’s Office, with support from Murray County Emergency Management, set up a secure perimeter around the Government Center and thoroughly searched the premises.

No explosives or suspicious items were found, and the threat was later deemed a hoax.

The incident was part of a larger series of similar threats across various counties in Minnesota.

By 10:30 AM, normal operations had resumed, and authorities confirmed there was no credible threat to public safety.

The response to the incident involved cooperation between the Murray County Sheriff’s Office, Slayton Police Department, Murray County Emergency Management, and the county's IT Department.
