Veterans Day in Southwest MN: Local Events to Honor Our Heroes

Veterans Day is a time for communities across the nation to come together in gratitude for the courage and sacrifices of military service members.

Today and this week, Marshall and SW Minnesota will host a series of events to honor veterans and offer a heartfelt “thank you” for their service.

These programs provide opportunities for families, friends, and community members to show their appreciation, hear veterans' stories, and reflect on the impact of their contributions.

Here’s a roundup of Veterans Day programs in the area:

• Marshall: The Adult Community Center will host a Veterans Day Program starting at 10:30 AM.

• Balaton: Veterans and their immediate family are invited to a free breakfast at Balaton One Stop from 8:00 - 10:00 AM.

• Cottonwood: A program will be held at Lakeview High School Gym at 9:30 AM.

• Granite Falls: Yellow Medicine East High School’s Espeland gymnasium will host their program at 2:10 PM.

• Minneota: Veterans Day program at Minneota High School starts at 10:30 AM.

• Redwood Falls: A ceremony at Redwood Valley High School gymnasium begins at 1:00 PM.

These gatherings are open to the public and provide a meaningful way to express gratitude, connect with others, and hear inspiring stories from those who have served.

Tragic Accident in Cottonwood County Claims Life, Leaves One Injured

A tragic accident occurred on Thursday evening in Cottonwood County, resulting in one fatality and one person critically injured.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, a 2016 Ford Edge collided with a westbound 2007 Peterbilt semi in a T-bone crash at the intersection of Highway 60 and Cindy Street in Windom around 6:35 p.m.

The driver of the Ford, 76-year-old Terry Lee Fredin of Windom, succumbed to injuries, while his 78-year-old passenger, Karen Jean Fredin, suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls.

The driver and passenger of the semi, Eric Alexander Murcia and Baylee Machelle Barsalou, were unharmed.

Local emergency services, including Cottonwood County and Jackson County Sheriff’s Offices and Windom’s police, fire, and ambulance teams, responded to the scene.
