Driver in Custody After Fleeing Lyon County Deputy on Highway 23

A 20-year-old Marshall man was arrested Monday evening following a brief police chase on Highway 23 near Cottonwood.

Around 6:30 p.m., a Lyon County deputy attempted to stop a 2017 Ford Escape, but the driver sped off. After a three-mile pursuit with lights and sirens, the vehicle was halted, and the driver was arrested without incident.

He now faces charges for fleeing an officer and permit violations.

A passenger was present, but no injuries or damages were reported. The Minnesota State Patrol and Yellow Medicine County Sheriff’s Office assisted.

Law Enforcement Sees Rising DWI Rates Amid Increased Patrols in Lyon County

Recent data from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) has highlighted a dramatic rise in DWI arrests in Lyon County over the past two years.

According to the BCA's newly launched DWI Dashboard, there have been 85 arrests in 2024, marking a significant increase from the 35 reported in 2022.

Lyon County Sheriff Eric Wallen attributes this surge partly to expanded participation in statewide anti-impaired driving initiatives, as well as heightened enforcement efforts.

The DWI Dashboard tool, now accessible to the public, allows users to view detailed information on DWI arrests and crashes across Minnesota.

Through interactive maps and filters, residents can explore data based on age, location, and time of incidents. Originally designed for law enforcement to track impaired driving trends, the tool is now a public resource that can support community safety and awareness.

The Lyon County data also shows that Marshall accounts for the majority of DWI arrests, with 57 of the 85 incidents this year occurring within city limits.

Marshall Public Safety Director Jim Marshall noted that the community’s calls for service have returned to pre-pandemic levels, which may contribute to the increase in impaired driving incidents.

Marshall emphasized the need for continued vigilance, especially with the introduction of legalized cannabis, which could further impact driving safety.

The rise in arrests is troubling for both Marshall and Wallen, who acknowledge the likelihood that some impaired drivers remain undetected.

Both officials view the new dashboard as a powerful tool in educating the public and reinforcing safer driving choices, particularly as enforcement continues to adapt to evolving public safety challenges.
