Marshall Fire Department Seizes Rare Training Opportunity on West Main Street

An innovative training opportunity unfolded Tuesday night as the Marshall Fire Department transformed a vacant West Main Street property into a hands-on learning environment.

The controlled burn exercise provided firefighters with valuable real-world experience in a uniquely ideal setting.

The department's leadership saw this as a golden opportunity when evaluating the property's features. Marshall Fire Chief Quentin Brunsvold highlighted the strategic advantages of the location, particularly noting its standalone position away from other structures.

Such isolation is a rare find in Marshall's residential areas, making this training exercise especially valuable.

Property owner Charles Bladholm's generous offer to use the building for training purposes set the wheels in motion. Before proceeding, the department conducted thorough safety assessments in partnership with a professional training provider, ensuring all potential hazards were identified and addressed.

Weather conditions played a crucial role in the timing of this exercise. An earlier attempt planned for October, which was intended to include multiple area fire departments, had to be postponed due to unfavorable weather conditions.

However, Tuesday's improved forecast, particularly the decreased wind speeds, provided the perfect window for training, despite the region's ongoing dry conditions.

The evening's curriculum included essential firefighting skills such as

  • strategic fire suppression

  • hose management, and

  • advanced search and rescue techniques.

A significant portion of the training focused on VEIS operations - a critical life-saving protocol that encompasses:

  • Ventilation

  • Entry

  • Isolation, and

  • Search procedures in burning structures.

Throughout the exercise, the department maintained close collaboration with their training provider, ensuring the highest standards of both safety and educational value.

This specialized training environment allows Marshall's firefighters to enhance their skills in a controlled setting, ultimately improving their ability to protect the community during real emergencies.
