Marshall Council Rejects Proposal for Golf Carts on City Streets Due to Safety Concerns

A proposal allowing golf carts on Marshall’s residential streets faced significant opposition during a public hearing, leading the city council to reject it.
Concerns were raised about the safety risks, especially related to traffic and visibility issues. The proposal sought to limit golf cart use to streets with speed limits under 30 mph and required safety equipment.
However, community members and council officials expressed concerns about the dangers posed by distracted drivers and semi-truck traffic.
Ultimately, the ordinance was voted down after safety was cited as a major factor.
Kwik Trip and Marshalls Set to Open in Marshall Amid City Growth

Marshall continues to grow with major development projects in 2024, including new businesses like a second Kwik Trip and a Marshalls store, which were highlighted during the Marshall Economic Development Authority (EDA) bus tours.
Kwik Trip is nearing completion and set to open later this November, while Marshalls is expected to open next spring in the former Shopko building.
These developments are significant as they will bring jobs to the area and stimulate local commerce, with Kwik Trip expected to serve a growing need for diesel access and Marshalls attracting shoppers from surrounding communities.
The EDA’s focus on housing development also aims to address Marshall’s increasing demand for residential units. Two planned apartment complexes could bring over 160 new units, including affordable family housing and senior housing projects. These initiatives support Marshall's long-term growth by increasing living options and creating new opportunities for home ownership.
In the industrial sector, the Solugen chemical plant project, though delayed, will be an essential part of Marshall's future economic landscape. Expected to resume development in 2026, Solugen will use dextrose from the ADM corn plant to create sustainable alternatives to petroleum products, strengthening Marshall’s position as an industrial hub.
On the job front, the upcoming closure of Yelloh’s (formerly Schwan’s) home delivery service will impact around 50 local employees. However, the EDA remains optimistic about reabsorbing displaced workers into the community.
Additionally, Schwan’s parent company continues to perform well, with over 650 employees remaining in Marshall, highlighting ongoing growth in nearby facilities.
The EDA’s proactive efforts, including public tours and transparent communication, ensure residents are informed about the city’s progress.
The tour allowed the community to not only see firsthand the development efforts underway but also hear accurate information regarding potential challenges and opportunities ahead.
With significant retail, housing, and industrial projects in motion, Marshall’s economic landscape is evolving, promising a prosperous future for the community.
