Camden State Park to Close for Special Deer Hunt This Weekend, October 26-27

Camden State Park will close to the public this Saturday and Sunday, October 26-27, for a special deer hunt aimed at controlling deer overpopulation, as part of an effort by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to protect local ecosystems.

When deer overpopulate an area, they overgraze native plants and saplings, causing long-term damage to the ecosystem.

This also creates an environment where diseases can spread more quickly within the deer population.

The DNR’s goal is to maintain ecological balance and protect the park's diverse wildlife. Deer overpopulation not only threatens plant life but also impacts smaller animals that depend on certain vegetation for food and shelter.

Reducing the deer numbers will help the park’s natural environment recover and thrive. As part of this effort, special hunts are being held across several state parks, with access restricted during these events.

In recent years, the DNR has also mandated the use of nontoxic ammunition for these hunts to protect the ecosystem from lead contamination, supporting ongoing efforts toward environmental sustainability.

While the deadlines for hunter participation have passed, the DNR encourages visitors to check park alerts on the official website before planning any trips to state parks this fall.

The DNR's deer management hunts are part of a larger statewide initiative, ensuring that the local ecosystems are maintained while providing safe, balanced environments for Minnesota’s natural resources and wildlife.

As more parks face similar challenges with wildlife management, this proactive approach helps preserve the long-term health of these treasured state parks.

Marshall Area Reports Increased Political Sign Theft Ahead of Elections

Thefts of political campaign signs in the Marshall area have spiked this October, with local police reporting multiple incidents in just a few days. So far, 10 reports of stolen signs have been filed with Marshall Police, with most incidents occurring between October 13 and 15.

The issue has also surfaced in other parts of Lyon County, including Ghent and Lynd, where a few additional thefts have been reported since June.

The theft and vandalism of campaign signs have been an ongoing concern during election seasons in the region. In 2020, the issue became so widespread that political parties, law enforcement, and media met to address it.

In 2022, city ordinances about sign placement were enforced, leading to more than 100 signs being removed from Marshall lawns for violating city rules. As the problem reappears this year, both local parties are urging the community to respect others' political opinions and property.

While sign theft may seem minor, it’s still illegal, and authorities ask residents to report any incidents. Law enforcement, including Marshall Police and the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, continues to investigate these cases.

Residents have voiced frustration with the thefts, but many remain hesitant to report missing signs. However, police encourage reporting such incidents, as it helps track and address the problem.

In nearby Minneota, there was a similar wave of sign thefts in September, which led to several juveniles returning the stolen signs after a public call for information.

The incident highlighted the broader issue of respecting differing political views during the tense campaign season.

With ongoing appeals from law enforcement and local party leaders, the community is urged to remain respectful of each other's political expression and to follow local regulations regarding campaign signage.
