$2.2M Bridge Resurfacing on MN HWY 23 to Cause One-Month Detour Next Year

A major bridge resurfacing project along Minnesota Highway 23 near Green Valley will require a month-long detour in 2025.

The $2.2 million project involves upgrading guardrails and approach panels on two bridges over the Redwood River and Three Mile Creek to meet current safety standards.

Drivers will be detoured via Minnesota Highway 19 and Lyon County Road 9, adding roughly 10 minutes to their travel time.

The improvements aim to enhance safety, provide a smoother driving surface, and extend the life of the bridges.

Forecasters Predict Colder and Snowier Winter for Southern Minnesota

Minnesota's winter is expected to return to colder and wetter conditions following last year's milder season.

Meteorologists are predicting below-average temperatures and increased snowfall due to La Niña weather patterns.

The region could receive up to 65 inches of snow, significantly higher than the average of 50 inches.

While October has seen fluctuating temperatures, how November unfolds could signal what the rest of winter holds.

Although forecasts could change, colder snaps are anticipated to occur more frequently than last year. Travelers are urged to stay informed and prepare for winter weather challenges.

Take a look at this checklist to get ready for the upcoming winter season:

Home Preparation:

  • Insulate Pipes: Prevent freezing by insulating exposed pipes and sealing gaps in windows and doors.

  • Check Heating Systems: Schedule maintenance for your furnace, and test your heating systems to ensure they're functioning properly.

  • Stock Up: Have extra food, water, and batteries in case of power outages.

Vehicle Preparation:

  • Winter Safety Kit: Keep a kit with blankets, water, a flashlight, and jumper cables.

  • Check Tires: Ensure your tires are winter-ready, and consider snow tires if you expect heavy snow.

Community Resources:

If you're in need of extra support, consider utilizing local resources:

  • Heating Assistance Programs: Check out programs that provide financial aid for heating costs.

  • Snow Removal: Seniors and those with mobility challenges may find snow removal services offered by the city or local volunteers.

As winter approaches be sure to check the latest weather forecasts and winter advisories to stay ahead of any snowstorms. You can visit the National Weather Service for detailed updates.
