Two Men Injured in 40-Foot Fall at Renville County Sugar Facility

Two men were seriously injured in a workplace accident at the Southern Minnesota Beet Sugar Coop near Renville, when scaffolding they were working on tipped over.

The incident occurred early Friday morning, sending both men, Chance Anderson and Tedrick Coleman, falling 35-40 feet inside a storage tank.

Emergency services responded swiftly, and both workers were airlifted to St. Cloud Hospital for treatment of their injuries.

Local emergency crews and air care assisted at the scene, and the Renville County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.

Workplace accidents involving scaffolding are a significant safety concern, particularly in industries like construction and manufacturing.

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), scaffolding accidents often occur due to improper setup, insufficient safety measures, or faulty equipment.

Employers are required to follow strict guidelines to ensure the safety of workers operating at elevated heights. These include proper scaffolding inspection, secure positioning, and the use of fall protection equipment.

In this case, it remains unclear whether the proper safety precautions were in place.

The Renville County Sheriff’s Office is currently conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the incident.

Companies in hazardous industries should always ensure that workers are trained in safe scaffolding use and that equipment is properly maintained to prevent similar incidents.

Farmers and Firefighters Team Up to Battle Blaze in Wood Lake

Southwest Minnesota has been battling extreme fire risks due to unseasonably dry and windy conditions.

The National Weather Service issued Red Flag Warnings last week, indicating critical fire weather across nearly the entire state. The combination of low humidity, dry vegetation, and gusty winds created a perfect storm for wildfires.

On Thursday evening, a field fire northeast of Wood Lake quickly escalated, requiring the coordinated efforts of over a dozen fire departments.

The blaze was intensified by winds of up to 50 miles per hour, and it spread rapidly across the dry farmland.

Local farmers played a key role in containment efforts by using tractors and plows to break up the soil and create firebreaks.

Emergency response teams, including the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, were able to prevent the fire from reaching nearby homes.

Although one firefighter required medical attention, no serious injuries were reported, and the fire was under control after more than three hours on the scene.

The drought conditions have worsened throughout the region, with September recording one of the driest months on record and October offering little relief.

The U.S. Drought Monitor currently classifies the region as being in moderate to severe drought.

Farmers are particularly vulnerable, with the lack of moisture affecting crops and livestock.
