Lyon County Supports $1.5M Child Care Center Project

The new daycare center in Minneota, spearheaded by Jamie Gillund, aims to address the region's growing child care needs by serving up to 100 children. This expansion comes as Little Explorers in Ghent has reached capacity and holds a waiting list of 70.

With the project’s budget of $1.5 million, it will also create 20 full-time jobs. In addition to the city's commitment, two lots valued at $90,000 will be provided, and grant funding is being sought from the state to cover startup and equipment costs.

County officials unanimously support the project, recognizing its economic potential.

The center will fill a critical gap in child care services as several existing providers in Minneota approach retirement age.

This effort exemplifies a public-private collaboration, where the city, county, and Gillund work together to enhance community infrastructure. If the $300,000 in state grant funding is secured, the funds will be used for essential items such as furniture and equipment.

The project is modeled after successful initiatives in other areas, and Lyon County is exploring ways to further support it financially.

The new daycare will not only benefit families in Minneota but will also serve as an economic driver for the county by creating jobs and retaining young families in the area.

The collaboration between local government and private business underscores a shared commitment to addressing child care shortages and fostering community growth.

Ex-Accountant Charged with Check Forgery and Fraud in Lyon County Court

A Marshall woman, Rikki Lee Kor, faces numerous financial crime charges for allegedly embezzling funds from KHC Construction, where she worked as an accountant.

She is accused of writing fraudulent checks and making unauthorized purchases with a company credit card, involving thousands of dollars.

The charges include 20 counts of check forgery, 14 counts of financial card fraud, and two counts of theft by check.

Kor’s next court hearing is set for Nov. 12, where the court will assess probable cause and address other legal matters.
